However getting back to use cases, an eReader should have a passive screen with good contrast thats easy on the eyes. It should have long battery life and be svelte enough to hold for long periods if you're going to read books. Adding note taking, it should have low latency, good notetaking software and a realistic writing feel to trick the brain into thinking you're writing on paper. For all of those things I go back to my venerable Remarkable 2. It cannot compete with the newer generation Scribe or Boox Note 2 Plus on hardware, but on every other metric it excels.
It is now 2025! And I am thinking of getting an E reader. Basically its a tossup between the Kobo Clara Colour or the basic Kindle. Can anyone recommend either of these or something better costing no more than 150 SFr? Thanks!
Do you already have a tablet? I use the (free) kindle app on my iPad mini. My wife has a Kindle Paperwhite and loves it.
I have one from Tolino, works fine (and I like not being limited to Amazon who can wipe off your books for whatever reason).
You can look at Calibre (website) that converts epub into Kindle format and viceversa.
I have the paperwhite. For basic book reading it works great.
Likewise. I’ve had a paper white for years and love it.
I used to have Sony (and just found out they no longer exist and don’t for a long time! LOL. Lasted long then but the past years I’ve not had one).
Anyhow, I would not buy a kindle (not then not now) for the same reasons you mention. I did buy lots of books from amazon though, using Calibre which gives me the freedom to buy from whomever I want.
I’m also thinking of upgrading an old slow device. For me, having access to Google Play Books is a prerequisite but with an Android interface I can also read the online journals for which I have subscriptions. The Onyx Boox 6 is in pole position. https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/onyx-boox-go-6-6-32-gb-black-ereaders-49240149
hmmmm, you should have bought it 23.12.2024
Exactly, and sorry about the cross post but… knowing that about the price change is what’s making me wait… there’s no rush
I’m a fan of the e-ink tablets with stylus for notetaking that also can be used as reading devices. Something like a Kindle Scribe, ReMarkable, Boox Note Air etc… What I would avoid are those with colour screens since they sap more power and the contrast is not as good as a monochrome device. All of the above can be used with Calibre so you can load your own book files.
Personally I prefer of the ReMarkable line of tablets since they are the thinnest, have the cleanest interface and there are no distractions. They also provide the most frequent updates as there are only two models to support.
I’ve been always on a lookout for a better universal eink device, but despite all the improvements nothing really fits my expectation to this day.
I even have Hisense Q5 RLCD Hands on Review - Good e-Reader which is almost perfect, except it should have a backlight or front-light when needed. As is it’s only best to use outdoors or when sitting by the window.
My latest purchase is NXTPAPER which is the best compromise so far. The reading experience is the best I’ve ever experienced from a LCD/OLED tablet. Can’t be used outdoors on a sunny day, but hey you can find some shade if you really must use it on a sunny day.
