I do not advocate putting pets through the stress of air travel, but in this largely expat community, sometimes it is necessary. Here are two relatively recent developments that are making this more difficult.
First, Swiss is now imposing a 175 CHF transfer fee for pets traveling in hold that transit via Geneva, Zurich, but also Vienna and Frankfurt.
Second, the US all but bans imports even by US owners/returnees of pets that come from 113 countries. Switzerland is not among these countries, but any pet that has traveled to these countries in the last six months is affected. This includes some of the basket-case countries in or near Europe like Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine; but also countries that have a pretty good track record as sources of some pure-breds, like Kazakhstan (for Maltese and various breeds of shepherd dogs).
