We went with a group this last Saturday and despite the rain it was a very interesting morning indeed. Many details are given in the link above, so check it out if you are thinking of going. Really worthwhile for all age groups. Highly recommended.

Rhine Trip Schaffhausen to Kreuzlingen

The boat trip from Schaffhausen to Kreuzlingen ‘via’ Stein am Rhein (not be confused with Stein AR in Appenzellerland where a Cheese Making Exhibition is to be found) takes five hours. The reverse direction takes a little less than 4. Schaffhausen has a pleasant ‘old town’ and the Munot Tower affords a great view from the ‘top’. Easy going up (none of those narrow winding stairs where it is difficult to pass those coming in the other direction). The Rhine Falls are well worth a visit too – especially at the moment. Also –er slightly ‘different’ from usual is the boat trip itself as the Rhine has so much water that the boats cannot get under the bridge at Diessenhofen. We had to get out of the one boat, walk under the bridge and take another boat for the rest of the journey. At a bridge just short of Konstanz, the awning over the top deck had to be lowered to the height of the seats – all passengers to the lower deck please; the ‘captain’s bridge’ had to be removed and the captain himself duck down to instrument panel level. Several landing stages were reached by rickety looking planks looking more like Venice than the Rhine. Really a trip for the boys and still-boys!

Other than these slight variations from normal, it is a lovely stretch of water with ever-changing scenery. Plenty of stopping points if one doesn’t want to do the whole distance – or doesn’t want to do it all in one go.

The Shipping Company is integrated in the Ostwind Transport Organisation so we did the journey to the starting point and home again by train.

I'd go to Europa Park in Rust (D)!

Does anyone when the kurbis race is at the juckerfarm in seegraben ?

Maybe call them on 044 934 34 84 and ask for yourself?

Hi, I'd like to start a new thread about easy walks/hikes in the Basel area - in Switzerland, Germany or France. I'm interested in sharing with others and finding walks for my children, so basically anything under 7km, but ideally 3-5 km, within about 45 minutes drive of Basel. I'm trying to make walking more fun for them, so it's a bonus if there's a playground or something fun to see/do. I would love to know more about walks in Switzerland.

See this separate thread.. Easy hikes from Basel

The Flumserberg ski area near Zurich has some really fun spring/summer/fall activities, 2 of which are constant and fun for little ones, adolescents, and adults - FLOOMZER RIDE ( ) and the major BOUNCY BUBBLE. They have many more activities like ropes courses, fishing, hiking, cheese tasting, and occasional family-centered festivals too:

The Floomzer ride is a mini roller coaster/toboggan-on-rails run situation. Little ones buckle up on lap of adult and tickets combine with lift ticket up (I think around 20chf; bought at lift office across from end of the ride).

Both are located near restaurants at the base near the parking lot in tiny Tannenboden, easily accessible via train and lift (1-1.5 hours) or car (45-1 hr) from Zurich.

Great list posted by Carmen -- always looking for new things to do.

Elm is nice also - especially in Winter for skiing - only about 1 hour by car from Zurich! warmly recommended indeed.

Guys, do you recommend visit the mountains Pilatus?

Somewhere not to visit is Zoo Siky Ranch in the Jura near Delemont. This is a small, tired and run down zoo and leisure park. The place is a complete mess with rusty old leisure facilities and over grown paths and animal enclosures. The smell of greasy fried food hits you as you walk in the entrance through the restaurant. If this wasn't bad enough, they charge you CHF12 for adult entrance and CHF6 for kids. In fact this place is so terrible it is almost worth a visit just to see!

Anyone else experienced the delights of Zoo Siky?

NO! This place was sad. It is old and run down. It is way too expensive considering it is mostly goats. And they don't have their tigers anymore. We went just to see the tigers, but NO TIGERS! Just go to the the Basel Zoo.

Hi to everyone!

Last weekend we visited Abbaye d'Hauterive

I;ve written about this trip in my blog:

...

Finally come Sunday and we went out to discover new sites and new experience. This time we've decided to visit the Monastery of L'Abbaye d'Hauterive, which is only 18-minutes away from our home.

The day was cloudy but warm. Soon we arrived. I was amazed by the size of the Abbey. It is the oldest active montasty in the western Switzerland. Built on a meander of the Sarine (river) it occupies a typically enchantress Cistercian site, where nature realises a happy harmony between water, vegetation and stone. In fact, it takes its name (alta riva, in Latin, "high bank") from the presence of an imposing cliff sculpted by the waters that shuts the site, like a insurmountable barrier, the site from the south.

L'Abbaye d'Hauterive was founded by William de Glane between 1131 and 1137. It was closed in 1848 by the decision of the government of Fribourg radical. The premises have been used for the school of agriculture, then as a regular school.

In 1939, the Abbey has been restored monastic life. You can learn more about the life of the monks and visit the heart of the monastery by organizing a visit with a guide.

Work and prayer is a typical monk's day.

In the church, with huge stone ceilings were unusually quiet, only the crackle of burning candles broke the age-old silence. Visitors came, silently sat down on the bench and prayed ....

Time seemed to stand still. There were no sounds of outside world, nothing reminds about that today is 2014. Inside of the church was the same silence as centuries ago ....

There is a small shop where you can buy wooden figurines, crosses, rosaries, icons, made by the monks, as well as freshly baked bread.

Come feel the quietness of Hauterive Abbey. It is worth a visit!

Looking for a cheap and cheerful idea for the Autumn School break here in Switzerland to keep my 12 year old happy. He's a skater fan so any recommendations for a really good skating park? Fancy getting away from ZH too so a night or two in some kind of accommodation would be ideal.

Very grateful for any suggestions.

There's a great skate park in Zurich opposite Sihl city.

Also this indoor one in Wadenswil http://www.gueterschuppe-waedi.ch

i was thinking of the same thing- if you are interested in coming to visit lausanne we could swap apartments my son loves visiting zurich!

and here in lausanne, there's a skatepark or he could skate by the lake, but lot's of other things to do as well-may be a cheap and practical solution

Thanks for suggestions - I am interested too!

So much inspiration and ideas in this thread. Thanks all!
