I am an American citizen moving to Switzerland to work for a company in the first quarter of 2023. My visa is currently being processed but it will probably be visa type B(temporary residency). I have done some research and after I prove certain conditions(compensation and accommodation), I can invite my non-EU partner to live in Switzerland with me but it depends on the canton's decision. Is there any way we can make sure that my partner's application gets approved? And how long after I move to Switzerland can I make the request for my partner to also move to Switzerland? Also, I was wondering if there is a way that my partner and I move to Switzerland at the same time? Maybe the company I'm going to work at can declare that my partner will also come with me when they process my visa application?
I guess Zurich allows this. But I have read that for non-EU citizens, this is harder. Would it be much easier if we were married? And also for the accommodation, I will provide has to be total of people minus 1 rooms for it to be accepted. So a studio apartment won't be accepted?
Yes, it's much easier if you are married, it follows a normal "family reunification" process, can also be done by your company so that you get visas at the same time.
If you are not married and are both non-EU this is unfortunately nearly impossible, unless maybe you are same-sex partners coming from a place where you can't get legally married.
Yes, Zurich is one of the cantons that issues this type of permit.
Studio apartment might be acceptable, but best to check with the cantonal migration office.
And a warning, from reports I’ve seen here re non-EU/non-EU pairings the dependent partner is unlikely to be allowed to work here. Nor would I count on getting a B permit; there are less of those than L’s and I’m not sure L permit holders would be allowed to bring partners here. Something else you need to check with the cantonal migration office.
If you call the cantonal migration office, they will give you way more information than we would. The Swiss are really helpful by phone in most cases.
It would absolutely be easier if you were married. (Your partner could come with you.)
Look up Concubine permit (HORRIBLE name arg), this may be something you may be able to use, but it takes a long time and requires loads of paperwork from what I've heard.
How much easier? Married to a Swiss, it's been 4 months now. Found a way to get a question to the OCPM w an online form after being required to register to ask a question. The registration seems to be for one question.
