I recommend joining a Verein (club) which matches your interests. Excellent way to meet locals and be exposed to German (albeit Bärndüütsch).
Trying to learn German from people who are trying to learn German is not a good idea, because you'll propagate mistakes. Mind you, learning German from the Bernese..... at least they are slow, but a bit hard headed.
The best approach is to find a local club or association that is offering something you are interested in and join them. You will find it easier to pick up the language if you need it to participate in something that interests you.
