Anyone for spam fritters? That's evil stuff, I have it on occasion, I feel like eating salad for three days after
Second, I've never, ever seen stock cubes or any kind of meat listed as an ingredient of salad dressing, it's very unprobable that the girlfriend is right.
You can always skip the dressing and just use the oil/vinegar/salt on the table to dress your salad Italian style.
a) bland
b) salty
Ocaasionally, both.

Here, a link about all that's good in the French speaking part of the country, any questions, just ask.
I had some Swiss guests recently in london and it was a joy watching them struggle through a giant portion of fish, chips and mushy peas.
There are very few indiginious foods in the world anymore. And with that attitude toward new foods I'm certain you would not like them. Taro root or Poi in the Pacific Islands, insects and roots in aboriginal Australia, or seaweed and sea cucumbers in Japan. The list is as long as your arm and all would seem exotic to one raised on fish and chips.
It is what you are used to. If from England fish, chips, and beer, Haute Cuisine, no? When I'm in England I eat breakfast three times a day. It really is the best of English food. I don't complain I just smile and order a good fry up. If they ask I tell them I just got to town and it's breakfast time at home.
Americans like burger, fries and coke. Such a treat!!! America, like England, like Switzerland, like Italy, like any other country is an amalgam of all the foods that the people who have settled there eat or are acustom to eating. Nothing more or nothing less.
I can understand the point of view of those from other cultures or countrys may not like a particular food. But it won't kill you to try it and if you don't care for it you don't ever have to eat it again.
The Brit who hated the Fondue and so vocally made it known to his host was a poor guest and I'll bet was never asked back. And he was so obviously delighted at the nervousness of his Swiss guests eating fish and chip in London. Had he been a gracious host he would have served a dish that was more familiar to the Swiss. Roast beef, vegetables and potatoes are almost always a safe bet. Better yet ask your guest if they have a favorite or want to try something new to them.
If you were invited to my house and berated the food served that evening and got legless to boot I can assure you that you would never be invited back.
Is that why the Swiss have gained a reputation of being distant among the foreign visitors to their country? Because they were hurt by a person who they now think, and not without reason, is an insensitive clod and in addition is a guest in their house and country. How rude. If that is how they acted in public what must they be like at home. It will be good to see the back of them.
Be a gracious guest and a more gracious host and you will go far no matter what country you are visiting.
You don't have to drink Swiss beer. That is why they serve various styles and brands of beer. Something for everyone.
Besides missing with all my heart a Swiss girlfriend in my life, this Californian misses a lot drinking any kind of Rivella, and a healthy Birchermüesli (specially in the morning) !!
Tschüs zämä!
If you were invited to my house and got legless to boot I can assure you that would always be invited back.

- Bio Birnel - Concentrated pear juice and nothing else, treacle like consistence, use like honey or melasse. Topped my strawberries and cornish ice cream with it, lovely. Equally nice on top of yoghurt.
- Tomme Vaudoise a l'ail des ours. Aka a little Brie like cheese with wild garlic. I'm not one for comedy cheeses (cheese with stuff in it) but it works pretty well.
Swisscheese, easy man, most Brits I know enjoy our melted cheese specialities and we mostly enjoy their own greasy stuff
The Swiss guests asked for fish and chips, so with the up most grace, they were served fish and chips. We even took the paper away and gave them plates and a metal fork insted of a wooden one.
Perhaps you should take some things posted in this thread with a bit more grace and a pinch of salt.
Quite a fan of the Migros rosti croquettes, though.
