General Cigarette Smoking complaint thread

In the interests of research, I bought a cigar at the weekend for the first time in several months, and enjoyed it immensely.

Maybe some people don't give a damn about your intolerance either ? Again I find myself asking the question: do you object to the reality of it affecting you, or the principle ?

dave

Presumably the enjoyment was achieved by smoking it?

Did you perform this act of indulgent self-mutilation in the privacy of your own home, or were you able to inflict distaste in the nostrils and damage in the lungs of others?

I enjoyed buying it, smelling it, smoking, enjoying the taste, and relishing the experience.

I wouldn't deliberately waft smoke in the direction of others, even those that pseudo cough from 200m away.

If you don't like smokers then perhaps you can not frequent the same drinking venues or hostalries that permit such decadent activity ?

dave

What I don't get with whole smoking issue is this:

we live in an increasingly litigious society. Europe will follow the US, the UK is already well on the way, whereby we sue whenever we can.

In 10 to 15 years time I imagine we will all be suing wherever we can. Surely bars, restaurants, companies - everywhere where smoking is today allowed - is laying themselves wide open to be sued for millions in years to come....

Well I was thinking of joining some of you guys on the socail evenings in Zurich but since I smoke and having seen some of the vitriolic comments posted here I'm just too scared to show up.

Hands up those people who don't smoke but have a car......nothing more to be said then.

AbFab, IIRC, don't you or did you once smoke?

It's not the people I object it's their habit. And that's exactly what I do (or don't do). I never go to a bar or restaurant to pay for a meal only to have it ruined by smokers - and have to shower the smell off my skin when I get home - and wash and air my clothes. No thanks. I simply do not go to any places where smoking is permitted.

It's not decadent - it's just daft...

I don't suck on the exhaust. And where is the evidence that 1000s die each year from exhaust.

I agree cars kill in accidents, but we don't (normally) think "I'm dying for a drive". Driving usually serves a purpose more than self-pleasure.

You are more than welcome as a smoker to join any social even you want. But I would not attend an event where smoking is permitted...

FYI I used to smoke 30 - 40 a day. Like all smokers had the idea that "one day I'll quit". I reached 30 and decided that I would either smoke for the rest of my life and have no guilt about it, or quit.

I quit...

I've attended a few drink meets, you won't be the only smoking...trust me.

don't let it stop you from coming out and mingling....

mmmm an ex-smoker. I would never have guessed.

dave

Finally, some other smokers joined this thread. I've been taking an absolute beating from the non/ex-smokers on here. I've been called everything from ignorant to friendless and been nearly accused of lying about my credentials.

Why don't we have a smokers only evening? I would love to "discriminate" against another social goup without feeling guilty!!!

I don't think one needs to suck on an exhaust pipe to suffer respiratory problems from exhaust fumes but i'm a scientist so i may be wrong.indeed the published evidence(google at your pleasure) is very clear on the association between the two.

Car journeys have a purpose and not only for pleasure...yeah right , more evidence from the rant position of logic.

oh well

I'm one of those *I smoke when I drink* people.

I can go days without wanting/needing a cig....but the second a drink is in my hand...well, light it up.

smokes don't taste the same to me without alcohol.

that being said, if I am around all non-smokers, I can easily go without...

I don't know what my point is exactly right now....haha

Are you drinking again ? But then the sun is over the yardarm. Spiffing.

dave

ok, I'm going to sound like a dumbass...spiffing???

no, I am not drinking now. yet....now...yet...

The Oxford English Dictionary labels it "colloq. and dial." and defines it as "Excellent, first-rate, very good, etc.; fine or smart in . . . dress and appearance." The first quotation illustrating its use is dated 1872. Dictionary says "Cf. next [i.e., spiffy] and such forms as 'rattling,' 'ripping,' 'topping, etc.]."

For "spiffy," it also says "colloq. and dial." "Of obscure origin; the shorter form 'spiff' is recorded in dialect use from 1862."

An article from the BBC on the after affects of the smoking ban in Ireland .

For every bad there's a good, right?

Seriously, for every bad article on tobacco/nicotine I almost think there is a good one. And before anyone goes jumping down my throat, I'm not saying that smoking is good for you.

People should just keep in mind for every scientific paper published there is most likely one refuting it.

Also, just because the mainstream media might pick one or two scientific articles that illustrates a particular point doesn't mean it's necessarily true. This is true for everything, I'm not just talking about smoking.
