It’s not unreasonable to ask in a friendly way “do you mind pointing that thing away from our meal”. Unless the person has got zero interpersonal skills, the usual result is an apology and an immediate stub-out.

I don’t think it usually plays out like this in Switzerland.

I find it sad, and quite common here that decisions which affect the lives of many people are made based on the personal preferences of those holding the power.
(perhaps with a financial incentive from a company or trade organisation with a vested interest).

Regrettably true. The addict’s court costs were paid by the tobacco lobby. An average Swiss person could not afforded the costs.

Oh, and the taxpayers of Geneva paid the Canton’s costs.
