I think it depends on your car, your dog, and more than side considerations. The topic of this thread was not the relative safety of the dog box, but rather getting one’s older dog into the dog box. My dog, for example is safer in most dog boxes because she will not sit still in the car. Even at 15 she jumps around.
She’s a midsize (25kg) dog. I’ve tried numerous seat belt/car harness configurations, which have been crash tested and the bigger problem is that she could strangle herself.
She has a plastic dog box - it’s got metal inserts, but it’s light and can open easily from all sides. She goes into the dog box and sleeps.

Lily doesn’t like open stairs. But they’re a great idea. So what we’re doing right now is to put her in the box and lift it. With two people, it’s easy enough. I have a ramp and a small set of folding carpeted stairs that I hope to train her with. I hope there’s enough cheese in the world for this!
She’s doing well anyway, so we just enjoy her company. She hates the car, so we adjust our travels as needed (vet and tierheim). She’s good on her own, pretty healthy for 15 years (in 2 weeks). I can’t ask for much more.
We bought the stairs yesterday in Germany for 119 Euros.(including Mwst which we will get back). The shop ordered them for us and happily let us test them out before buying. The staff came outside to watch because it is a new product and they had not seen them in use. They were really impressed.
The stairs seem easier for our dog to use than the ramp. They fold up and store compactly in the car. The stairs are open and I can understand how some dogs may prefer a ramp, especially older dogs. In the past for our older dogs I covered the ramp with anti slip material.
Nothing wrong with seeking the best value for all the accoutrement we need for our mutts.
After all, saving a bit on 'stuff' means I can afford to spend more elsewhere in Switzerland, notably the not-so-small fortune I regularly (and gratefully) drop at the vet clinic. My dogs are significant contributors to the Swiss economy.
We used to buy dog food from a store in Switzerland. Last time I was at the Paketshop in Germany picking up an Amazon shipment there was a huge pallet of dog food outside with the store’s name and address on it. I might as well order direct. The Paket shop is closer than the pet store...
Disclaimer: I know nothing about this product, nor the price. I'm just passing on the link, here, because it is advertised as reduced, and that might help someone here who has a small dog.
