Hi there,
My partner and I have been together for 5 years. We will not be having children and for this reason were not planning on getting married - as we did not want to be taxed as one person.
However, we bought an apartment in the last 6 months and went to the notaire last week and found out we would have to pay about 50% tax if the other person passed away as we are not married.
We are now considering getting married and I am very happy as I always hoped we would get married but it did not make sense before we owned an apartment together.
Who could I speak to - maybe a financial advisor on the pros and cons about us getting married. Or should I go back to notaire and just ask him?
Please feel free to add or let me know of any information I don't know about this above.
Thanks
Marriage means that you are each others' next of kin - as it stands your friends' family can deny you access to his/her deathbed. It also changes the application of inheritance law. While such things can be dealt with outside marriage, marriage is really the simplest thing.
If you're both earning reasonable salaries, and about the same income seperately, then, yes, you'll have to pay more tax. You can afford it - and it's worth the extra rights that marriage gives you.
Context: my wife and I will soon be just the two of us. We lose out tax wise. Frankly - couldn't give a toss.
I feel the same. Even before we realised this we were hoping to do some sort of non legal ceremony so now it all makes sense.
It made more sense when we were trying to put together money to save for a little place together - but now we have done that and we don't need much in life
