Glencore Zug?

My grandparents were child laborers. What I don't understand about industrialize nations is how they can build their countries up with child laborers, cut all the trees down, pollute the rest of the world, gain a certain level of greatness, and as soon as that happens take an approach to lesser wealth nations as being archaic, un civilzed, and destroying the planet.

It doesn't mean cause one did it, others should until we destroy everything. But, until those who have made a success for themselves just feel like being the charity givers to the rest of the world, the rest of the world will follow in their success.

On a lighter note...

Can't disagree with this, it's a bit of a dump to be honest.

... and can't really disagree with this either !

Hi , anyone on here actually a Glencore shareholder, who wants some info for the upcoming annual general meeting on 9th May.

I recently worked on the second mine (MUTANDA) being built in DRC by Glencore and have to say that the BBC Panorama programme was absolutely spot on in its accusations and contentions about Glencore, in fact i would go as far as to say that its at least twice as bad as was stated by the BBC.

http://www.glencore.com/mutanda-mining.php

Glencore work on the premise in DRC that they can hire rough neck types to do their dirty work and pay a small premium as the job market is down and pretend that what goes on in DRC stays in DRC. Well now that they are listed and people have the chance to hit them like their not used to, they will start feeling the negative effects of ignorant corporate behaviour.

Swiss natives should be running these wild so called billionaires down the street and out of town. imo.

PD.

Glencore may leave CH if the 1:12 initiave is passed

How many people are actually employed by Glenncore in CH anyway? Would it have a big impact on Baar?

They won`t be the only ones. A lot of companies will either move or work out a structure around the legislation.

Yes, it would. And on the many companies who service them.

It won't pass. The Swiss know better than to bite the hand that feeds them.

Agree its totally ridiculous to expect it pass and almost all multinationals would be unable to achieve the formala. Companies such as Glencore would simply just move to a country that is willing to accept them and there would be a queue willing to invite them.

I actually do expect it to pass. Losing some companies like Glencore is nothing compared to the political statement that Switzerland will make.

Also, how will a company that is on the SMI explain its shareholders that it plans to move because of top management's salary? (try to find a country with a similar tax system, stable currency and politics. the choice is pretty limited)

You will find it makes little or no difference, this is just a populist move.

Top managers will work abroad and be "seconded" to the Swiss office or they will work 2-3 days per month here and the rest outside Switzerland.

Problem resolved.

Good riddance...

There only needs to be one choice, and there are probably a couple. Shareholders don`t run these companies they are too dispersed. IF it was passed and IF it was implemented there would be a race to the door so fast Switzerland wouldn`t know what hit it. The ratio is too low even though I can support the concept. I do like the concept of shareholders voting on CEO salary.

You don`t even have to go that far. All "junior" employees are now subcontracted/ outsourced through our new venture, Glencore Junior Personnel.

Beat me to it this is what will happen large increase in outsourcing and creation of service companies to serve the parent company. Well done to the popularists vote as you increase the level of job insecurity to the very people you want to protect. Nothing stopping most multinationals doing the same to create a legal setup to comply with lawyers being the biggest winners

makes sense. how come nobody in the sp thought of this? unia actually wants glencore out of switzerland regardless.

Simple reason why they didnt think of it. The have no idea on how business actually is performed and probably are stuck inside some uni bar

Glencore outed itself when recently threatening to leave Switzerland if the 1-to-12 initiative gets approved.

If this is what they are, Switzerland in fact can do without them. So that everything above does not come to me as a surprise.

They are an American company with their HQ in Switzerland which means that neither the American nor the Swiss public or government has real influence.

In biology lessons you learn about hyenas and vultures. Many vultures are impressive and even beautiful in a way. Glencore is neither, unless you love the idea of Greed is beautiful

Corporate 'greed' is what switzerland was built on. Just ask who stored nazi gold.

Glencore is staying, Zug will not kick out one of their major revenue streams. All the residents should also consider how much tax Glencore subsidise; If glencore leave, their tax leaves too (and so does the revenue of all the companies that service them). Are the residents happy to pay significantly more tax to compansate?

Remember Gordon Gekko:

'Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures, the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge, has marked the upward surge of mankind'

you might not like it, but he aint wrong.

I fundamentally disagree that Switzerland was built on corporate greed.

Gordon Gekko is a fictional character created in Hollywood out to promote a certain message. The message, that greed is good, is designed to sound good, but has no grounds in reality.

> No, Switzerland was built on the wish neither to be German nor to be Austrian nor to be Burgundish (French) nor to be Savoyard/Piemontese/Lombardian. Corporate greed was not worse than in the neighbouring countries.

> Nobody here in Switzerland is to "kick out" Glencore ! You misunderstand. Nobody threatened to kick out Glencore but Glencore threatend to leave Switzerland when the initiative gets adopted as I hope it will. I personally believe that Glencore will stay in spite of that YES.

> The citizens know that if Glencore leaves, the taxes to be paid by other companies will become slightly higher. And the initiative is not decided in Zug but on a federal level. Add to this that many people in Zug are angry about the dominance of such international companies. Which means that the Canton of Zug will be among the YES cantons

Whoa whoa whoa, lets just hang on a minute here...

You're telling me...that 'wall street' the movie was in fact NOT a documentary? I think I need to lie down for a minute...

Switzerland has always wanted to (and succeeded in) bring business to Switzerland. Whether this was due to its banking laws, it's corporate tax rates or its business laws, is irrelevant. Switzerland has wanted to be seen as a place where corporations can base, preferentially to other countries. Corporations have wanted to base here because it costs them the least, and that is where corporate greed comes in.
