GLP-1: Mounjaro (Tirzepatide), Ozempic/Wegovy (Semaglutide) and diabetes?

I think you are making a mistake in logic even though basal calorific requirements are quite high and exercising only increases them by say 25% taking a ball park figure (obviously highly variable depending on the amount of exercise)

Changes really only show up longer term (at least a week). I know of no recent evidence that says a sedentary lifestyle is in any way as healthy as an active life-style, either in terms of weight loss or in general well-being.

People can express their opinions of course but much of these aren’t going to help the OP as they are plain nonsense (as are California Dreamer’s)

Agreed but it’s up to the OP to make up his own mind based on what he reads, it’s not up to us to make his mind up for him.

Not sure what your point is. You provide a link to a calculator for calorie intake from food. And?

What’s that got to do with the fact that taking exercise will not provide enough of a calorie deficit to lose weight which was my point?

Your thinking is flawed and based on the nonsense that Coca Cola et al pushed that if calories in through food are less than calories burned through exercise, you will lose weight.

It’s so much more complex than that.

I know of no evidence either. Lots the other way.

Many forms of exercise reduce all-cause mortality by not-insignificant amount.

(Not all though - Base Jumping probably doesn’t)

Agreed - that’s why I’m strongly arguing my case and trying to displace the nonsense.

Certainly I would prefer to lose mainly fat than muscle, but also weight. I enjoy running and cycling up hills, so actually losing weight is a key goal.

Also, I didn’t actually start this thread, I did the right thing and continued an existing one. Maybe I was too optimistic (naive), but I was expecting peeps to chime in with their own experience or references rather than judgement and contradiction. Thank you to those who did relate.
Ultimately I will take the advice of my physician.

My sounding out here was more for an (in)sanity check…which has worked…I am confident now there are people out there more insane than I am.

If I have a knee injury, there’s little difference between fat and muscle mass. 1 extra kilo is still 1 extra kilo the injured knee is supporting during every movement of the joint.

I don’t have supplemental O2 with my machine, but a friend does. I think it’s an O2 concentrator that can be hooked up to the CPAP but also allows a quick boost of O2 via a mask should he be feeling unwell. Worth asking if you do the sleep study and find you need assistance.

The most I’ve ever weighed in my life was probably around same the place in the life-time cycle you are in. Not as much as you so easier to lose.

Young kids took up so much time and four hour runs were replaced with visits to the zoo or the playground.
I also damaged a knee, didn’t do anything about it and so stopped mountain running.

Cycling doesn’t hurt my knees, I’ve always done it so I did a bit more.
I like cycling up hills too, the same as I liked running up them.

I can’t help with the weight loss but, especially in summer, getting up really early at the weekend means you can get a few hours in on a bike, in the cool, in the peace and without the Sunday drivers.
You can be back before the action starts.
Admittedly, this works better when the kids are older.

It helps that I’ve always been a morning person.

Sorry if I’ve been a bit argumentative on this thread but I stand by what I said about exercise and weight loss.
Do both but don’t expect the former to help much towards the latter.

Good luck!

I’m going to mention it.

If you are time short - have you tried calisthenics? Minimal (or no equipment needed).
You can do it at home (so no travel time needed) and their are many progressions so you can start at any level.
Also, just fifteen minutes here and there (+ warm up) will make a difference.

A big plus over weights is there are lots of different goals which keeps it interesting.

My son asked me to put up a pull up bar (which he then proceeded not to use) but I discovered that many core exercises employed are excellent for reducing back pain which I used to periodically suffer from but no longer do.

Some exercises are great for cycling too.

There is a social element too if you find an outdoor calisthenics gym which are slowly appearing in some towns - no cost here either.

Hope that’s a useful suggestion.

No idea what your calculation looks like but it’s clearly faulty. Your example walk burns 10-11kg bodyfat over a year (95kg, 30mins, 3km → ~200 kcal burnt).

So, litespeed may well have lost noticeble weight with climbing for some months.

I think it was probably a long shot finding people with personal experience in a group this size.

Actually, there is a calisthenics gym nearby, which I may visit to get some proper instruction. After that I would look at doing more of it at home.

As you mention, it is the young kids/expat life that has swallowed me up a bit. As my boys get older it is getting better, but they aren’t at that level of independence yet where I get the higher level of freedom. I’ll be closer to 60 by that time so I want to do what I can now. (Yes, I started late with a family).

I feel this too. How old are the kids now?

My best friend from school who is a year younger than me was just diagnosed with cancer and this made me think more about how little I’m looking after my own health.

Mine are 5 and 7, and I’ll soon be 54. I would like to be around until they become functioning adults.

Mine are 4 and 7. I’m only 48, but the amount of deterioration my body has experienced in the last few years has been a bit scary.

You don’t think it’s because of the seaweed?

On the other side of 50, all warranties and guarantees have definitely expired, so yeah, one needs to be proactive.

TBH, I am not scared of death, but I am scared of leaving my pre-adult children without a Dad.

Same. I’ve been raising my kids to be quite independent just in case I die early. The eldest, I’m confident will be fine even if I die tomorrow.

C’mon you guys. Too much negativity. I am a T1 diabetic, have prostate cancer, am a little overweight and have recently turned 70! I plan on living forever.
