Meanwhile, Slammer is at the Zulassungsstelle failing to get a dinky trailer zugelassen because the size of the tires is not mentioned in the papers. She asked what tires does it have and wasn’t satisfied with, round and black.

It feels a bit weird to listen to all in US measurement units and actually understand without knowing exactly why. Time flies...

BOOOOM! What a spectacular end though. For a few moments during Lift off I was reminded of watching the Apollo launches at my grandmothers.

Note to self: find more interesting sidegig.

The landings were much more intriguing. An urban myth perhaps but apparently so many people didn’t go to the loo in the 10 minutes before and after that problems occurred with water supply and sewage systems all over N. America.

Looking at the footage I think I saw a few puffs in the exhaust and thought: „there goes an engine or two“ and indeed there is a shot up the ass-end of the rocket that shows a bank of engines out. Probably causing uneven thrust that the rocket couldn’t compensate for.

I think Starship has 32 motors on the first stage, the same amount as the Soviet N1 and after the N1‘s Explosion it was thought to be too difficult to keep that amount of motors running in sync. Going to be interesting to hear what SpaceX finds out

Well every bit and piece returned to earth. Not necessarily in a reusable form. I wonder how many fish will die from this test flight?

That was all part of the plan. Success was defined as getting off the launch pad and the launch pad surviving - everything past that was gravy. And as such SpaceX succeeded far past their hopes in this launch.

Both stages were planned to make hard landings (i.e., not survivable) regardless of how things went. This is part of the iterative process of making a reusable and safe space delivery system.

Absolutely terrible planning dumping 5,000 metric tonnes (11 Million pounds) of metal and fuel into the sea and atmosphere.

This is not the way to test something.

Allegedly as many as 6 engines failed to work from takeoff and more failed in less than four minutes.

This vehicle wasn’t ready for testing.

Ahhhh, I get it now.

It may take several iterations. And, if anything happens along the way, all those engineers will spill out to other industries with a great amount of experience

I would wager (not being a rocket scientist), that the test was also (if not mainly) for the launch pad with no flame trench - dealing with the most powerful rocket ever built.

Sure enough, there was significant damage from huge chunks of concrete launched aside damaging, fuel silos, cars, raining down on bystanders, and possibly even damaging some of the rocket engines.

The realistic goal was for the rocket to clear the tower, everything after was bonus data.

It was pretty great to watch - truly a milestone in human history.

I respectfully disagree. While travelling to the asteroids, moons and other planets is a laudable goal, shitting in our backyard is not the way to do it.

Could you enlighten us and explain how to launch the biggest rocket ever into space with no test flights? Would you be on the maiden flight?
