Good Kebabs? Zurich/Baden and Beyond

In Baden, I liked a lot the one in Trafo. Avoid like plague the one in front of the station, under the red bricked building, next to the chemist. Another one that looks good (never tried though) is the one on the Mellingerstrasse, right after Falken.

In Wettingen, I liked the one at the roundabout at the far end of the Wettingen Strip [1] right after Fust and Denner, across the Landstrasse 99 mall. I think it's called Sun Bar or something. It used to also sell fresh produce, but they rehauled the place and now they only serve food. Their pizza also looks good.

I never dared to try the one with the attached turkish barber shop, in front of Muller Mode. You know, it just sounds weird.

To whom suggested the one next to Elite: it had a line because it is outside a movie theater. And yet it still managed to go out of business. Go figure.

[1] I know it's the Landstrasse, but it makes me giggle calling it "the Strip"

After all my travels, I've got to say that my favourite kebabs would be the Lebanese chicken breast variety. Absolutely unbelieveable!

There used to be this place on Rue de Berne in Geneva called Amir Beirut that served the best I have ever had. After carving the breasts, he would stuff them into the pita and then put the pita into a sandwich toaster to crisp them up a bit and then add the salad, chilli and garlic sauces.

I promise you, I had one almost one every other day. I might have forgotten to mention that they also had a cabaret !

The Lebanese did cost more than the minced meat Turkish variety, but hey ! you must pay for quality. If money was tight, we'd go to the Turkish kebab house on the same street 2 doors down. Still tasty, very filling, but 80% chance of delhi belly.

Thanks you ..you remain me, old good time at geneva ...at my stone age ..

Thanks

Definietly, that was one hell of kebab !

Zurich.. Delicata across from Sihlstrasse tram stop, Uraniastrasse 40.

Very nice.

Thanks Anton ... Do you know if the place is still open? Its been over 10 years since I've been there ...probably not huh !

The Cabaret girls were very nice too !

Marcashvin, Polorise, Anton:

can i verify, is this kebab joint called "der Grüne Libanon," opposite the cablecom building?

btw, i am a complete retard for not finding out what "sujuk" meant. was lost, asked the first turkish looking person that came along, asked if he knew where i can find sujuk and was promptly directed to the nearest kebab....half a mile away from the cablecom building...

In St Gallen, Lemon in Linsebuhlstrass is the best. Meat sliced as you wait and very friendly service.

Star in Bruhlgass is also very good and again sliced while you wait.

I really can't belive some places put the meat in drawers.

By the way, anyone know where you can get Turkish bread? I used to go to a Turkish bakery in Koblenz in my student days where a 3 DM loaf gave you tasty food for an entire day :-)

As regards abrakebabra, they are still going in galway. The same disgusting "meat", plastic "vegtables" and rough as f#*% at night time.

Maybe this thread should be renamed "Good Kebabs? Zurich/Baden and Beyond.".

(Btw, I had another delicious Kebab last night in that place that many of you are fed-up hearing about)

ok, go ahead then, it is the kebab thread after all

polo, anton, marcashvin; still waiting for verification...help!

special thanks to Zuericherin for the useful info

Trick for young players... a pittabrot in Zurich is actually more like a hamburger bun than a normal unleavened flat bread. If you want your kebab in the standard archetypal pita bread then remember to ask for fladenbrot...

Now, where can I get a decent souvlaki in town...

great tip there!

Been here 4 months and am still hunting for my beloved Lebanese kebab ...

I prefer kebabs that are made from cuts of meat or chicken rather than the minced block variety. I've eaten the minced Turkish kind very often but prefer the Lebanese variety when I'm looking for something special.

I remember a place in the French part where the vendor would slice the meat, wrap it in the flat bread, shove it into a toaster/grill to let it crisp up a tad, then stuff it with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, hot sauce and garlic sauce. Man oh man, was it GOOD.

Any such offering in Zürich?

Your wish is my command!

These restaurants may admittedly be a bit more expensive than a "snack-imbiss", but in these restaurants you for example can sample supreme Lebanese and Moroccan wines, beside good meals.

re The best doner kebab

-

Döner Kebab is the Turkish name for Shawarma Kebab. Bear in mind that an Arak from Lebanon is a Raki in Turkish (my-arak in Arabic is raki), but an Arak in Greece is an Ouzo, while a Greek Raki is a kind of liqueur.

re

As long as we are including the chicken variety, and I'm not 100% sure we are, then New Points (the Langstrasse one) chicken breast kebab is definitely the best - nom nom nom.

-

chicken ? No no no no no no no ! Kebab is to be with lamb, with beef acceptable as alternative. Chicken is barbary and rubbish. Those who serve "Chicken-Kebab" ought to be tarred and feathered .

for some cheap "imbiss-like" authentic lebanese food, try out Libanon Il Achdar just behind zurich main trainstation.

besides chicken schawarmas, you can order lamb kebabs called kafta. the mixed grill plate for one or two is recommended - big portions. a few small tables inside with lebanese staff.

I had a great Shawarma at Les Délices D`Orient on Badenerstrasse 85, 8004 Zürich. It's right opposite the Lebanese Restaurant Cèdre.

Take Tram No. 2 direction Farbhof and get off at Bezirksgebaude. A nice small place serving Lebanese specialities. Really worth a visit. Inexpensive and delicious.

I suggest you only go during meal times. In that way you get served fresh food and ingredients. I once went at 4.30pm in the afternoon and the meat/chicken came out of a heated drawer rather than the Kebab grill.

Excellent cooking, but no wines. In summer, it is no problem to bring some wine and a glass with you, take a seat right outside, and enjoy a meal of them

I have never in my life eaten any kebab that rivals those I had while I lived in Berlin. It was served in a quarter of crisp Turkish bread, which I haven't seen ANYWHERE since, with about 6 different types of fresh veg, and the meat was sooo good that you could eat two in a row and not feel sick.

I would pay above average prices on a regular basis to find a place that did something similar.

the sujuk is a heavily spiced sausage
