Gotthard and the other tunnels and passes

Just in time. Last school day in some cantons is today. People going south have alternatives.

Yes that’s correct and will start again hopefully in Sept - still repairing the tunnel

From WRS today a couple of useful Gotthard links.

The TCS has a specific X/Twitter page exclusively for updates around the Gothard tunnel @tcsgotthard. It posts updates regularly.

For those particularly enthusiastic about the traffic situation, there’s also a webcam positioned at Goschenen looking southbound on the A2

Gotthard rail tunnel is almost back

First train passed through the repaired rails after being destroyed in an accidentg last year. Within a few weeks all back to normal.

Congestion pricing may arrive to Gotthard tunnel.

Simon Stadler, a member of the National Council from the canton of Uri, has tabled a motion calling for the introduction of a “variable toll for north-south transit” - in other words, a type of tunnel charge that would vary depending on the volume of traffic. The Grand Chamber will now decide on this in the special session at the beginning of May.

“The amount of the charge should be dynamic based on the volume of congestion and thus create incentives for a cyclical driving behavior,” he explains. In some cases, 80 percent of vehicles are from abroad. He is convinced that Germans in particular are very price-sensitive - which is why the volume of traffic will be reduced.

Will residents be entitled to a discount?

It’s mentioned on the 20min article, inhabitants of Uri and Ticino being exempt is under discussion. But, there’s a big issue. If some drivers don’t pay, lawsuits aiming at not everyone being treated equally.

So, the discount is nice, but it may kill the whole plan.

It’s not just potential lawsuits it’s exemptions for locals are contrary to the bilateral accords CH has with the EU. I too would object to residents of only two cantons receiving discounts when the other 24 would pay the full whack.

However a possible solution would be for a ‘frequent traveller’ discount that could apply after the sixth annual journey, for example.

I drove to the office today after 10h00 to avoid the traffic due to roadworks on the A1 between Othmarsingen and the Reuss. Oh surprise, the Gotthard is closed and everyone wants to drive via the San Bernardino.

Today won’t be a nice day for driving between Basel and Chiasso

I came across this photo of the Gotthard pass in the 1960s.

This was before the road tunnel and the new pass were built - it’s the old Val Tremola coming up from Airolo which you can still use today.

Just shows that traffic has always been a problem in the area and isn’t a new thing!
