Graduating before finishing an internship

Hi all,

I am a non-EU student, currently doing a mandatory internship. My internship contract is finishing soon, and I see that there is a high chance to be extended according to my employer. My master thesis is also not fully done yet.

I was wondering if I will extend my internship for another 6 months, meaning until February 2023, what usually happens if I graduate before the end of my internship contract, example in October 2022?

Internship is tied to my student permit, once I will graduate this student permit is no longer valid. Would this have an effect on the existing internship contract? Not sure about these tiny details, maybe someone experienced the same or know something? Thanks a lot, happy to hear your thoughts!

As far as I know, for non EU students your internship is tied to your course requirements not your student permit. If your course requires a 6 months internship you will be allowed to do so, but once you have met the requirements it will not be extended. In any case student permits allow you to work a certain number of hours each week to support your studies, from the second year I think. Perhaps you could use that allowance to continue working there.

Hey! Thanks for your reply. My course requires 6 months of internship with a possibility to extend it for 6 more months. I have a document from the university also stating the same.

But I also want to graduate once I am done with my thesis. So, I was wondering if I will finish my studies before my internship contract finishes, what will happen? I mean I have signed the contract right? Would the cantonal authorities allow me to finish my internship even if I graduated already? That’s what I wonder...
