Grinding my teeth please help

To cut a long story short: I couldn't use guard - it was just too uncomfortable for me.... Also, i mostly do this during the day, while at work.

For a while, i tried a thing called anti-gymnastics, that worked quite well: http://www.antigymnastique.com/anglais/tb.html

(there is a practitioner in Switzerland, but, helas!, located in Bern....)

Eventually, i moved to Tai Chi classes, and that also worked quite well. If you can relax your muscles before going to sleep, you will be all right.

Bruxism is no fun. In really bad times, i can actually lose part of hearing sense and become partly deaf due to the compression of the nerve.

Would the sports guards do the job?

They are less expensive than the apotheke ones!!

There's tons of stuff on the internet but there doesn't seem to be any single cause. Possible causes or aggravating factors range from stress, other sleep disorders, the malignment of teeth, over stimulation due to smoking, consumption of alcohol and caffeine, over-exercise, side effects of medication or even a more serious underlying disease. Because there is no one cause, identifying it can be difficult which is why people are advised to get a mouth guard which will stop it.

I do this and it was really making my teeth ache. My dentist filed my teeth and this seems to have stopped it, so a mouth guard might not necessarily be the first step. My dentist told me he had to have root canal treatment as a result of grinding his teeth, so he had some actual experience of it himself.

The filing was actually a very simple thing to have done. You might have to have it done a couple of times to really sort it out and it might be that a mouthguard is the best thing for you in the end.

Go and talk to your dentist about it. It might not be as bad as you think.

Hi Sutter

I would also recommend going to the dentist. If his/her option is too expensive you can always try something else, but they normally have the best solution.

I have been grinding my teeth for years in my sleep - but only when stressed, and not thought too much about it. I'm currently pregnant, and about 2 months ago I have an inflamed tooth nerve - cause? Probably me grinding my teeth!!!! Very painful, had to have my nerve removed with as little anestie as possible due to the pregnancy, and more treatment due once the baby is born. THEN, after all that we will start to treat the cause - the teeth grinding.

As all the treatment so far was required stuff that I couldn't avoid I haven't even dared to ask how much it's all cost me so far - and I'm sure you believe me when I say I'm not looking forward to THAT letter in my post box

I'll happily let you know how much it all comes to in the end if it helps with your decison, although from what I've heard dentists prices can vary widely in Switzerland. I also live very close to Germany, so I'm considering getting a quote from a German dentist as well.

P.S. Sounds like we're going to have to cut down on all that cocaine and ecstasy

Sutter seems convinced that she is not stressed. There has to be a cause

(Disclaimer. I am not suggesting that anyone on EF is taking non-prescribed drugs or advocating that they do)

exactly, posters seem to ingore that completely and she does it in her sleep, she said ...

I can sympathise - I used to have this problem a lot, I think in my case it was stress, but obviously as many posters have mentioned , as it happens in your sleep it can be difficult to work out why. I just used to wake up with very painful teeth and gums and often a headache too. I would say a mouthguard sounds like the best option, although my teeth grinding seems to have stopped now so maybe it's something that just goes away in time. Hope it gets better soon!

Thanks everyone, i will make an appointment and see what the Dentist says i don`t feel stressed took the test thanks DP says i have good control, but maybe i am with the kids being ill never thought of that .

Sada no you do not get on my nerves

The replies here show how common this condition is. At least a dozen of us mentioning this. Perhaps we all need to chill out a bit more

I know it was a surprise to see how many other members have this problem aswell , chill out hmmmmmmmmmmm will do actually as soon as my other half wakes up i am going for a sleep let`s see if i grind them

try to keep your mouth open and snore ... but then you'll have another problem to solve ...

Yup... drooling! Then Sutter has the problem to change the sheets every

morning!

FYI, I use the mouthguard thingy... I have TMJ, grind at night and more

recently have an infection in the jaw joints. Painful to eat, leads to

headaches and sometimes dizziness.

Get the mouthguard. It is easy to get, just ask your dentist for one (like

you already made an appointment...).

LOL not that bad yet

Not yet they are closed on sundays will make 1 tomorrow, but then again may wait until we are well again, don`t want to make another appointment then have to cancel it again

LOL thanks for the giggle i am sure my husband would thank you for your post

sutter is getting a mouthguard

you are so bad cannut !!!

just you wait and see how you'll get punished for this !!! strange things growing on your tongue, which will then hang out from your mouth ...

I have a question, which is not entirely unrelated.

Has anyone had their teeth bleached here?

It's popular right now (wonder why....?!!) and I'm sure it costs an arm and a leg.

Anyone got any tips or recommendations (or any disadvantages) on doing this??

it makes you look younger and sexier, apparently

Have you done it, Sada??
