Hairdressers and tips

Welcome to Switzerland!

I was asking for a response like that.

Is there no direct analogue of a local London barber here?

In general do you need to make appointments too? The reasoning here is to have a go myself, but be in a position to head out and get "professional help" should it turn out I have a "lack of aptitude" with clippers.

Her spamming habits aside, she is a good hairdresser.

It sounds like it. It is so nice to find someone you like! I'd give her a shot, but I rarely get to Zurich. I always end up having mine cut when I'm in London, for some reason (and I get to London more frequently than I do Zurich, these days!).

Be on the lookout for an old fashioned Italian barber. I asked the husband, but he hasn't been to a barber in at least 10 years ... clippers down to the scalp with his hair

There are some listed above.

Generally though, there aren't the barbers you get everywhere in the UK.

*sigh* I do miss Glasgow City Barbers... 20 minutes, £8.50, some banal chat...

There are loads of barbers for local people. I can fully recommend this thread:

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Cathy20 and to let other people know that her recommendation for a hairdresser back in October 2007 - old thread about English speaking hairdresser in Zurich - was great and should be passed on.

Cathy recommended Thea Colson, Styling Lounge, Froschaugasse 10, 8001 Zurich (off Niederdorf) www.theacolson.ch . Thea is not cheap (CHF90) but if you are like me then you may find its worth it for a good cut AND just as important, being able to communicate what you want in English. In my experience this works out costing less than a cheap first cut followed by the second more expensive one to put it right so that you stop feeling like you have been to the butcher or had an unhappy meeting with a lawnmower!

Thea is very friendly and welcoming and put me at ease immediately, I left with a stylish cut that was done with confidence. In addition to her initial training as a hairdresser she spent 2 years at the Toni and guy training salons in London, followed by a further year working in Wimbledon area.

Hope this helps another new person looking for a hairdo as well as those who have been here for a while and need someone better!

Ladies, My wife goes to Planet Hair in Chur. She swears that Manuel Leotte is absolutely fabulous. His English is excellent. But make an appointment a couple months in advance cause it is difficult to get an appointment. I have no idea if he is expensive or not... Regardless, My wife looks good and she always feels good about his work.

Guys, I can recommend the G-Vision on Poststr. in Chur. Very friendly, Good English, etc. 30 CHF is the avg.

I tip because I get a good head massage, an espresso / glass of wine / juice and all the gossip from the neighbourhood. Priceless!

Just so that nobody else almost dies of shock:

Don't go to André Joe in HB if you want a cheap haircut. I went to Petra who did a fantastic job, the cut and blowdry was 109.-, which I didn't think was that bad, until I went back two weeks later to have loads of fine streaks and a tint put in, for the price of, hold it, 284.-, no fancy blowdry. So no, I didn't tip...

I also go to Thea and have been since I arrived in Zurich over a year ago. She is great- easy going, speaks english, german & italian and have never had a complaint about how she cuts my hair. I do tip..maybe a little too much if I am comparing myself to everyone else..usually around 10chf. I am still in the US mindset when it comes to this..she does a really good job so I feel she deserves it.

Hi all,

I recently went to McConnell, Limmatquai 128, Zürich and was really pleased. Aside from Lee himself, there were several hairdressers there who spoke English, with a lot of expat clients in the salon. I can definitely recommend Aya - she did a great job and her English is very good too.

Embarrassingly I had absolutely no cash with me, so paid by card and when I asked her if I could add my tip to the card bill, she said to not worry. So will definitely take some cash with me next time.

Thea seems to be the best hidden secret in Zurich.... I also had my hair done chez a few days ago, and she did a very good job.... It even seems that i have less grey hair showing

I tipped this one CHF75 once, and I'm done for good.

Britney? You're moving to Switzerland?

I finally got up the courage to have my first haircut here in Switzerland, and took one of the recommendations in this thread. I no longer look like Morticia Addams (anyone remember her?) It was very expensive for cut and highlight (CHF 200), but I feel very stylish and it was much cheaper than the therapy I was starting to need from allowing my lack of German to control my life. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I chicken out on doing some things I would actually like to do, like going to hairdressers, if I think my limited language skills are going to make it painful.

I tipped 10 Francs and wasn't sure if that was going overboard, or not enough. I just can't bring myself to not leave anything if I'm happy with the service ... ingrained in me from living in the US, I guess, even though the hairdressers I know personally there are not so underpaid.

ok, so who/ where is good in Zug - I have been putting off the necessary, but can do no longer, so would welcome any suggestions.

You guys are being overcharged. I go to a Greek barbershop near home, a father and two sons, and they charge 12 SFr and I give them 3 SFr as a tip. I always feel a little richer after my visit.

Hi

My hairdresser is absolutely fab, although expensive at the same time. In Bern, he has his own place called Success (actually, it is Coiff Your Success, but everyone just calls it Success). He also works in Zurich most Fridays: in "Blow", in Bellevue just next to the Opera House. Ask for Pino. English shouldn't be a problem, but it is not cheap (the full package incl. cutting, colouring etc etc is about 200 fr.).
