Is there no direct analogue of a local London barber here?
In general do you need to make appointments too? The reasoning here is to have a go myself, but be in a position to head out and get "professional help" should it turn out I have a "lack of aptitude" with clippers.
Generally though, there aren't the barbers you get everywhere in the UK.
*sigh* I do miss Glasgow City Barbers... 20 minutes, £8.50, some banal chat...

Cathy recommended Thea Colson, Styling Lounge, Froschaugasse 10, 8001 Zurich (off Niederdorf) www.theacolson.ch . Thea is not cheap (CHF90) but if you are like me then you may find its worth it for a good cut AND just as important, being able to communicate what you want in English. In my experience this works out costing less than a cheap first cut followed by the second more expensive one to put it right so that you stop feeling like you have been to the butcher or had an unhappy meeting with a lawnmower!
Thea is very friendly and welcoming and put me at ease immediately, I left with a stylish cut that was done with confidence. In addition to her initial training as a hairdresser she spent 2 years at the Toni and guy training salons in London, followed by a further year working in Wimbledon area.
Hope this helps another new person looking for a hairdo as well as those who have been here for a while and need someone better!

Guys, I can recommend the G-Vision on Poststr. in Chur. Very friendly, Good English, etc. 30 CHF is the avg.

Don't go to André Joe in HB if you want a cheap haircut. I went to Petra who did a fantastic job, the cut and blowdry was 109.-, which I didn't think was that bad, until I went back two weeks later to have loads of fine streaks and a tint put in, for the price of, hold it, 284.-, no fancy blowdry. So no, I didn't tip...
I also go to Thea and have been since I arrived in Zurich over a year ago. She is great- easy going, speaks english, german & italian and have never had a complaint about how she cuts my hair. I do tip..maybe a little too much if I am comparing myself to everyone else..usually around 10chf. I am still in the US mindset when it comes to this..she does a really good job so I feel she deserves it.
I recently went to McConnell, Limmatquai 128, Zürich and was really pleased. Aside from Lee himself, there were several hairdressers there who spoke English, with a lot of expat clients in the salon. I can definitely recommend Aya - she did a great job and her English is very good too.
Embarrassingly I had absolutely no cash with me, so paid by card and when I asked her if I could add my tip to the card bill, she said to not worry. So will definitely take some cash with me next time.
I tipped 10 Francs and wasn't sure if that was going overboard, or not enough. I just can't bring myself to not leave anything if I'm happy with the service ... ingrained in me from living in the US, I guess, even though the hairdressers I know personally there are not so underpaid.
My hairdresser is absolutely fab, although expensive at the same time. In Bern, he has his own place called Success (actually, it is Coiff Your Success, but everyone just calls it Success). He also works in Zurich most Fridays: in "Blow", in Bellevue just next to the Opera House. Ask for Pino. English shouldn't be a problem, but it is not cheap (the full package incl. cutting, colouring etc etc is about 200 fr.).
