It is getting more popular over here a few yrs ago we hardly had any kids last 2 yrs we have had loads. I'm nearly running out of sweets and I bought loads. I dress my kids up paging DP to pls post a photo
My son wanted to go out Trick or treating but thought he was too old at 14. So he went up to the local Youth center and asked if he could have a Halloween party in their disco room with bar/ kitchen. They told us that is ok as they wanted to have a Halloween party but the Land said No they could not have one for the kids- as it's not the tradition here and they don't want it and denied their request to have one. So we bought Candy, chips, ice tea, fanta, citro, cola, popcorn, peanuts, tiny sandwiches, paper plates, cups, napkins. Then got the Scary ghostly music of ours and put two carloads of decorations in that place. But the idea that the Land or gemiende refusing to let the youth center have a Halloween makes me mad at their lack of an open mind. Just venting my 2 cents worth.
We had at least 40 children at the door, generally in packs of 5 or 6.
I think my wife and child are the only two Americans in the area, the rest are Europeans, mixed lot.
I took the little one trick or treating and knocked on doors of people I know well enough to annoy, or if they had any sort of decoration, or if their kids were out and about.
I also carry candy so if the neighbors are not prepared I can give them candy they give it to my kid. But everyone was prepared. I think only 1 neighbor I am close with who I warned this afternoon didn't realize what it was.
As a kid who wouldn't latch on to a ritual of filling a bag with candy
Yesterday and today evening, some people here had visits of dozens of kids, smaller and "larger" ones. Particularily a Kosovari family clan in two or three apartments. The granddad of them all has just returned from Kosovo, possibly with loads of sweets
Suppose people had lots of fun, and the happy faces of the kids were nice to see.
If I had children I was responsible for, I would be wary of them accepting food stuff, candy, from people I did not know. If you are not sure, I suggest you examine their goodie bags, better to be safe than sorry.
Pity that the children do not participate in the door knocking, costumes and general fun but their older brothers do throw expensive eggs out of trams at passing pedestrians and motorists.
We bought some candy and Mars bars to give away. Since Halloween is not celebrated at all in this remote village, we decided to bring our carved pumpkin and candy to the children For lunch we have cheese fondue hubby and little one carved a pumpkin for the first time together. I think it turned out really well and we got to meet our new neighbours!
I hope everybody's alright this morning, it was a nightmare last night.
Walking home last night I found myself surrounded by a load of zombies. Battle ensued and I managed to off about 10 of them before I could make my escape.
Funny thing was they were all about 4 foot tall and carrying sweets
Last Sunday was Solothurn's big Sonntagsverkauf (Sunday shopping day) and one of the larger shopping centers had live music, face painting, and pumpkin carving for the kids- all operated by workers dressed as witches and vampires, etc. In the local newspaper I saw an advertisement for a dinosaur museum that would be open and decorated halloween night. There was also a reminder about watching out for the kids in costumes while driving at night, and to turn off the exterior lights if you don't want groups at your door. Last night, I was delighted to see lots of very cute monsters, goblins, and hippies trick-or-treating, and nearly all of them were Swiss. Perhaps our area is the exception, or perhaps more families are embracing the fun tradition. By the way, I saw no evidence of vandalism or any egg-related pranks last night or this morning.
My daughter was a zombie too, as well as her friend (also female), but she is 5'8" and her friend about 6'1"!
Meanwhile, my friend's 10-year-old son went trick-or-treating with some friends, and in addition to candy, came back with two pizza's that a restaurant had given them!
As suspected we had no trick or treaters. Though I had though about the light thing. We have a motion sensor light and I don't know how to keep it on all the time. Now I have all this candy to eat.
Next year I'm going to put out lighted jack o' lanterns and see how that goes. Hubby suggested we should put up a sheet and project scary movies on it. I think that's a bit much.
My grand-daughter insisted on doing the rounds last night with friends insert - quote from above - and this morning about 2am was puking her heart out and "suffering terribly, I can`t go to schooooooooollllll .......my neck hurts, and I`ve got a funny pain in my throat ..... and my stomach feels like something not normal ........." and didn`t hear her alarm clock, so got called by teacher at 9.30....... ... and well .... now reckons she`s about to give up this begging for sweets. And consuming them ALL in greed!
(Ja - I`m a hard-ass gran) Besides which, as I pointed out in my calm serene manner - "Your mother buys you sweets, and I bake cakes, so why you want to go begging for sweets from strangers? And don`t you know by this time what tooooo much sugar does? And how do you think your body functions on all that sh*t? And ........ And ......."
