It also depends on the weight of what you want to hang. We don't have any heavy mirrors or photos with heavy frames, so we use those tiny tack-like nails and they barely leave a mark. They also don't require a drill, just a gentle tapping with a small hammer.
Ever since one moderately expensive mirror did come down and shatter to smithereens (no, I wasn't the one who thought a big nail would be good enough), I tend to err on the side of caution and go for one size too big rather than too small.
Filler and wallpaint are cheaper and easier to replace than antiques and art.
Our apartment was a new build when we moved in 3 years ago, but the one thing that really annoys me about it is the walls are finished off with stuff like Artex in a stipple effect. You cannot wipe it clean and last week a picture fell of the wall in out hallway, thankfully only the frame broke and the glass was still intact. Last year the same thing happened with a poster in my spare room.
We've both had skinned elbows off this stuff and when my sister came in 2019 she asked why a new build would have something on the walls that went out years ago (and her German friend said it's classed as very old fashioned there.
I've decided not to rehang anything in that part of the hall, but can somebody give me tips on filling the dink in and roughing it up so it matches in well?
In most specialized shops you can buy textured plaster mix, ready to be applied (in German it’s called Strukturspachtel). It’s usually available in 2 or 3 particulate sizes. Something like this: https://www.doitgarden.ch/de/p/67604...inkoernig-500g
Love that tape, I used it in my music room to hang decorations. But on a wall it would leave a mark just as difficult to get rid of as a nail or an anchor. The textured plaster covers a hole in like a minute. It’s super easy.
Not so Fast! I was using the 3M adhesive strips with the Velcro. Had a picture up for 3 years, fell of the wall on Sunday, shattered the glass. Awesome
Though I even have my coat rack and shelf held up with the 3M tape. I’m thinking the sudden change in temp, from hot to cold on Sunday possibly made it loose it’s grip. But alas, now I have a broken frame and a big scratch on a photo print.
