let’s put it in perspective. Remember when you took a plane and people smoke during the whole flight?..or when you went to the disco, and your mom would put the clothes on the balcony because you’d come back stinking tobacco (..and what not).

Yes, vaping, or puffing, or however you want to call it, is as bad - if not worst- as smoking cigarettes; already proven that is more addictive; it causes emphysema, neuroinflammation, and the byproducts show cellular invitro toxicity. But…heeeyyyy… you choose what you want to die of!
(NB > pure, raw tobacco - like in cigars- has a different profile of toxicity)

Nicotine addiction in any form is an addiction and needs to be treated as such. Not only should the availability of nicotine delivery products need to be restricted, addicts need to be helped in kicking their addictions. We need to see higher taxes, health care surcharges and importation bans - no more duty free cigarettes!
Despite being more expensive than our neighbours for just about everything, for nicotine products that is the opposite.
And dare I suggest - we need to ban political contributions from tobacco to cantonal and Federal politicians.
The reason I suggest this is my observation that every time anti-smoking measures have been debated in parliament they have failed-but every time the same measures were voted by the people they have passed with comfortable majorities. This suggests to me that our parliamentarians are being unduly influenced.

I remember once in Zurich HB a couple were smoking marijuana and the Bahn police walked by and gave a ticket to a couple whose dog wasn’t on a leash

Getting back on topic, I do wonder how well a national referendum on the topic would go. No doubt the SVP would be against it.
To do what - ban smoking from SBB property which the public can access?
Not sure how it could be enforced - SBB say they are powerless now to enforce any smoking rules so what would change?
The referendum could seek to ban smoking in certain public places, such as any designated transportation stop or station. Make it a crime punishable by 30 days in a nicotine-free place of confinement.
I, personally, would support a wider ban on smoking, vaping or consumption of any nicotine product in any public place.
SBB railway stations belong to the SBB, they can still make the “House Rules”. So what powers do railway police have if they can’t enforce the law?
The biggest problem is the tobacco lobby is powerful in DACH countries. The relatively cheap price of cigarettes here just goes to prove it.
As I have mentioned before every anti-smoking proposal to go to Bern has been defeated usually by large margins in both houses. Every anti-smoking proposal either as initiative or Referendum has passed easily by the people.
Our politicians are well out of touch with what the people want on numerous issues, particularly on smoking in public.
They need to eschew contributions from any source with a vested interest in the particular issue.
This seems to be a contradiction / failure of the direct democracy model, or am I wrong?
