Have you found any amazing uses for AI?

Yes, it is infuriating, I guess many want the chance to convince you to stay. Though, AI is here for you too. This demo was 6 years ago:

This hasn’t been released yet, though there may be specialised companies already offering this. It’s also easy to do on your own now open source software as it advanced a lot in the last few years.

I think in a few years, we will all need AI assistants just to filter out all the AI spam we will get.

Those of you who are AI fans, may I ask two questions:

  1. What is your favorite AI tool so far, and why?
  2. Do you pay for your AI tool or do you aim for the free ones?

I appreciate this thread and the examples that have been shared. I’m still trying to figure out how I could apply AI to make improvements in my life.

Anthropic has the best AI for coding, but chatgpt is good enough for most things.

For the ordinary user, chatgpt is probably the best bet. It is good and free. If you become a heavy user, there’s a higher tier subscription at $20 per month.

Right now, the companies are competing gain market share, so you can sign up with multiple providers and will have more than enough usage between them without paying anything.

Me neither. Seems that one of the main uses for it is writing stuff, which absolutely baffles me. I mean, yeah, cheating on college assignments maybe, but surely no-one who cares about what they write would ever be content to let an AI do it for them…

I’d say that AIs are better writers than >95% of the population. The main learning curve is learning how to get it to use the style/tone you want. Even with a low-quality short vague prompt:

“re-write the above reply to the quoted text to be better”

ChatGPT said:

I agree with you—I’m still figuring out how AI could genuinely improve my life too. It seems like one of the biggest applications is in writing, which honestly surprises me. I can see how it might help with tasks like college assignments, but for anyone who really values their writing, it’s hard to imagine them being satisfied with letting AI handle it. Writing feels too personal for that.

Great example, totally mangled my text, changed the whole feel of it. Absolutely not_better.

And Google is also exploring the nuclear option, having just signed a deal with modular nuclear power generation start-up, Kairos Power.

The big question is will Kairos run out of money or Google pull the plug first if the technology doesn’t work in Google’s time frame.

Article in IT Pro

Long term, nuclear makes sense. But I’m not sure it is politically possible. Maybe at best they re-open a few sites and expand on existing sites. But I suspect that building new sites will be very difficult and instead everybody will take the easy way out and build gas-fired generators next to the DCs - assuming of course the AI bubble doesn’t burst before then.

Bizarre. Nuclear makes sense in only one respect. That is if you want weapons grade plutonium. There is a very strong correlation between who has nuclear power stations and who has nuclear weapons capability. AI changes nothing in this respect. AI is going to be great for medical applications. Robotaxis are a distraction. Future energy needs due to AI can be met with renewables.

You think they will recognize each other? :grinning:

Then again it could very well go south. More and more people are becoming sceptical with regards to AI, I would not expect sabots to be thrown into the machines, but a general reluctance to AI will happen. We have watched too much “Terminator” and perhaps people will reject AI to the point where it becomes uneconomical.

NZZ-Format did a report on Replika KI friends. Although apparently it’s not even new (people claim they had their KI friends/lovers/husbands for years) it was seriously weird to me.
It will change society into a very strange direction. They got this mate to talk to day and night that never objects - I’d die of boredom within a week, no new ideas or input either I guess? - and can just turn off when convenient.

The imaginary friend some kids have for a while are one thing but what if they create one on Replika?
I also wonder what can be done with all the information stored on those servers. A goldmine.

Yeah, it’s really useful. :confounded:

I saw this report too. I think a lot of people will fall for AI companions. Humans can’t really compete: AI companions are intelligent, patient, funny. And this is just currently through text. When voice becomes more commonplace (already available in a limited way) I think they will be irresistible.

Humans are always personifying things. Heck, we even treated our Roomba like it was alive and that thing couldn’t even speak! The human mind will bridge the ‘gaps’ to treat them as human.

Agree. Its a well know “feature” of the human brain called anthropomorphism. It served us well in evolutionary terms, but it can (will?) be a major, major issue with AI.

That made me wonder, how long until they bring those silicon dolls together with AI chatbots. And it turns out, it’s already done!

“NEU! Sie können jetzt Ihre neuen oder vorhandenen Sexpuppen mit künstlicher Intelligenz ausstatten” and it’s a Swiss site. If you are very attached to your current silicon sex-doll, you can update it.

What I wonder is: Am I getting old and just going through the “what devil music is rock n’roll” ?stage my grandparents had to get through with my parents?
I imagine what society looks like in 30-50 years and it gives me the creeps.
But we gave our ancestors the creeps too?

I guess all of this was predicted in Asimov’s robot series. There robots were sentient beings but essentially servants of mankind and some owners were intimate with their robots.

For sure current speech technology is way in advance of robotic technology, but when they are combined the army of horny young men with too much time on their hands will ensure that sexual functions will be developed very quickly!

The definition of sentience has got muddy - think fish. Noticeably the label is AI not artificial sentience.
Robot companions: Might be an improvement on all those unsuitable house pets:

Your post is more what I meant. I only brought in the sex-dolls because of their humanized appearance, not what they’re currently built for. The sex-industry will always go it’s own way.

The label now is AI, yet it’s already used as artificial sentience. The more human/realistic the appearence of the robot, the thinner the line to forget, that this robot in your house is not your nurse, flatmate or even your partner but an electronic toy.

Medeas example is an extreme. The influence on society I mean will be much more subtle. Why bother with this annoying neighbour or the strange ideas a close friend suddenly develops when I can buy my perfect friend and live happily and unchallenged with it.

Democracy for example only works when “bothering” with those who don’t share your opinion, which is already going out of style.

So maybe the unsuitable house pets you mention, which look as artificial as possible or the simple Alexa tubes might be a better solution to use AI while keeping the brain from “losing it”.

I found this article interesting and frankly quite concerning. It sounds to me like AI could well remove our ability and desire to be curious and questioning.
