Help! Basel vs. NYC (salaries, prices)

Hi there,

I have lived in both Basel and recently NYC (East Village and S.W. Harlem/Central Park North) so I have an idea of costs.

Both cities are expensive, but in opposite ways.

In NYC, it is the rent that hits you hard. I found day-to-day expenses (food, eating out, clothes, transportation, etc) fairly reasonably priced - though I realise that NYC is very expensive by US standards.

In Basel on the other hand, you'll find that rent is comparitively inexpensive, and that that apartment you get will be a lot better in quality that what you get in NYC. Where you wallet really feels the pain is on the everyday expenses. Groceries are expensive (particularly meat and fresh produce), and eating out is very expensive. The price of a so-so meal at an OK restaurant in Basel will cost the same as a meal at a very good place in NYC.

Living off that one Swiss salary will make things tight but if your husband can find a similarly paying job, you should be fine.

It's also worth remembering that it IS possible to economise, even in Switz. You can do most grocery shopping over the border in France or Germany. You could get a place in Basel-Land, as opposed to Basel-City, which would mean a small increase in commuting time, but allow you to save a good chunk on rent, income tax and the compulsory health insurance.

I also found that because there is so much to do in NYC compared with Basel, it was FAR easier to fritter away money in the US. I don't have this problem so much in Basel.

I personally think that you would be OK on the one salary here, so long as you economise. The fact there might be a second source of income, should make things a lot easier too.

For what it's worth, I would say that even if it might not be the most financially lucrative decision to live overseas (for a while at least), it will be a very enriching personal experience to have, even if you ultimately decide it's not for you and wind up moving on or going back to the US.

Keep us posted on how things shape up and best of luck!

Sorry to jump in on this thread with personal concerns, but now I am nervous about making it financially in Switzerland. I will be moving to Schaffhausen in August and my salary will be less than 85K (about 10K less). Same situation - I have a husband that does not have a job yet and we have a 2 year old son. I assume the cost of living in Schaffhausen is less than in Basel, so maybe my salary will be ok? Or are we headed for tough times?

probably Basel is more cost effective compared to Manhattan....i don't think rents or prices of apts have dropped much with the current meltdown in NYC...or have they ?

If you live outside Manhattan, it's Basel that is more expensive (eating out etc)

Rents are dropping but more for the high end places and for apartments outside of the desired zone in Manhattan (thus Harlem, financial district and the buroughs). I concur, rent is probably cheaper in basel (price for valuewise)....everything else is cheaper in Manhattan including public transport...health insurance is difficult to compare because it will depend on how much your employer subsidizes in the US, versus no subsidy in CH, though real cost is lower.

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to answer.

We decided to move to Basel and see how it is. I'm very excited about my new job!

I'm also looking forward to meeting any of you when I get there (January). I'll definitely keep reading here in the meanwhile.

to be honest, 85k is a lot of money. it wouldnt be a life of pinching pennies. we just opened a shop, and even though my wife keeps her job, we are living from much less. and i dont have the feeling of missing out on something. you can live easily with that cash. i'd say: give it a go.

Good for you! As far as health insurance goes, check in the Health Insurance thread, and Jenny, one of the members here is really helpful with advice about health insurance. There are options that can make your health insurance less expensive. Health insurance is a little different from the US, but we've found the care and the system to work out just fine.

i would be concerned if your husband could legally obtain employment in switzerland. also, does he have skills that are needed in switzerland?

You will luv your job, its a no brainer.

The nice thing about Basel is that you're just over the border from Germany/France and going out for a meal in Weil-am-Rhein or Loerrach is no problem and much cheaper. I think Basel on 85,000 will be just fine. And when you husband finds a job too, then you'll be able to live on one salary and save the other.

Also, the food shopping in Germany at the Rhein Center Weil-am-Rhein is much cheaper. While you can't bring back much meat, you could bring loads of other stuff back some of which you won't even be able to find in Switzerland.

Living in Basel-Landschaft also mean much lower tax than living in the City of Basel and definitely much cheaper than France.

In terms of quality of life, I think you've made the right choice....your kid could grow up to be bi-lingual (or even tri-lingual) if you send them to a local school. The kids also still walk to school by themselves here (with little reflective triangles round their necks...so cute!), play out in the street, ride their bikes around town...and no one seems to worry about gun crime or kidnappers. Life in general is more outdoorsy and family-oriented. I think you'll love it...I have certainly never regretted moving here. Good luck with the move!
