I had a link on amazon.de, that said I could buy content from amazon.it - thought it was going to give me both options. But it has fully transferred my kindle away from .de, to .it - and I can't figure out how to switch it back. Address still shows Switzerland, so changing address won't help. Site it all in Italian, so I'm stuffed.

Contact Amazon directly via their chat or email, they are very helpful at sorting things like this out.
.com for Kindle, .de for almost everything else, .fr once in a while.
Only challenge is with gift certificates. They can only be used in the domain they were purchased in. I had pounds in .com.uk and literally couldn’t use them as most things wouldn’t ship there. I used them finally for gifts for the people that had bought them for us.
I mostly read in English but also occasionally in french and I get french books from the .fr site.
