I have a B permit and I’m based in Zurich. In June, I needed to leave my apartment and found it very difficult to find an alternative that was within budget. The competition is fierce. So, after spending a month in an AirBnB, I left in July for 3 months to spend time with family “back home”.
While I was there, I decided to look for rooms thinking that would be easier but It wasn’t any easier. Eventually I found a room and came back to Zurich and am living in this room. I need to register with the local geminde but the person I’m renting from has told me that I can’t use that address because apparently someone else is registered there. Something like that...
I was always planning on moving out and into an apartment but I assumed that that wouldn’t be for another couple months since, like I said before, it’s not easy finding a suitable place.
Other than moving out (obviously that’s a solution) are there any other interim measures I can take to sort out or pause this registration issue? What’s more, I just received an email from my companies’ HR that I need to give them an address since I’m not a Swiss citizen.
I am unsure why the person I’m renting from is adamant that I can’t register there and I don’t care why, I just want to resolve the matter without anyone getting in trouble...
You may find that the person you are renting from is doing so with out permission, or has exceeded the occupancy rate, or or or... and yes, you may lose the room if something amiss comes to light.
But in the end, whatever the person you are renting from has going on is not your problem. Complying with registration law, however, is.
Perhaps you should care why. Usually when that sort of comment is made it’s because, for some reason, they are not allowed to rent out rooms or haven’t informed their landlord/agency that they’re doing so.
And no, you can’t pause registration; it needs to be done within 8 days of you changing accommodation.
When you go to register, you may need to bring supporting documentation about where you are living.
How do you pay your rent? Hopefully by bank transfer.
Do you have a rental agreement of any kind in writing?
Have you paid a rental deposit?
Lastly, do you receive mail at the address where you are living? Is your name on the mailbox?
If this is where you are living and pay rent, this is your home. If the person you are renting from has told you that you cannot register as living there, something is not right.
