Home NAS and self-hosted services

Absolutely. That’s the approach I prefer too — WireGuard keeps the NAS tucked away, with no need to expose the shelf directly to the internet. Simple and considerably safer.

Yes, I’ve linked email. Gmail’s setup can be a bit fiddly now, especially with authentication. Once connected properly, though, the automatic attachment archiving works nicely.

Ever hear of Tailscale?

if you don’t want to rely on cloud, why would you use something that relies on 3rd party? where actually all you need is a simple secure direct connection

You make that sound simple with the simple word. If only simple things would be so simple.

I use wireguard. Fairly easy to set up.

Also from an Android phone or iphone?

Yes. I have it on my Android phone too.

For a super easy start in self hosting I can recommend freedombox.org, you can use their downloadable images for dedicated hardware or just install minimal linux and use its package manager to install freedombox package Debian | FreedomBox - Personal Server at Home

Its wireguard app has super easy setup for mobile devices, just click add, display the QR code to scan with your mobile. Most mobiles would understand the QR out of the box, but you can always install the native wiregard app from Installation - WireGuard
