IIRC there is o “tolerance “ time, not even 1 minute.
Because they are used to people trying to ride without a ticket and just buying one onboard when they see an inspector.
True for honest travelers, some however will try it on expecting that the activation of the flex pass after boarding the train gets accepted. I bet this is precisely why activation nowadays must have been confirmed before boarding - they’re used to people trying all kinds of shit. IIRC there’s no tolerance.
You quite eloquently demonstrate why a pass is not a ticket, not even in India.
It all depends if Swiss Travel Pass for consecutive days (1 single activation) or Swiss Travel Pass Flex (to be activated every day it’s used)
But, OP has not said anything more.
You seem determined to accuse the OP of being dishonest, I’m only pointing out that from what little they actually said there are many possible ways in which this could have been an honest mistake, not sure why you’re trying so hard to dismiss any possibility of that.
And even if it were a Swiss Travel Pass I don’t see, in any case, why that points to them being dishonest - if anything it’s surely less likely that they would have tried to defraud the railway when using it for a single journey - someone doing so would surely have got the cheapest ticket they could, if indeed they were only buying it when the inspector came asking.
I suspect they’ve already left Switzerland by now.
