How much rent should I pay in city of zurich and surrounding areas ?

I am moving to Zurich soon. I am a single guy. I don't have much demand

min requirement :

1 bedroom

1 kitchen

1 bathroom

how much budget should I keep for apartment hunting?

is it 30 or 40% of gross salary?

Any input is appreciated

No more than 33%. When I was renting that was a limit. More than that and they wouldn't rent to you.

Try to never pay more than a third of your salary on rent, for reasons of pure common sense. I am sure you can take a look at the available options and price ranges in the various areas of Zurich, do your budgeting and decide how much you are willing to pay.

I ended up buying my own apartment, but I used to rent in Zurich. My rule of thumb, if you live alone, don't ever spend more than 2k per month for a one-bedroom apartment, even if that is only the 20% of your salary. You're literally wasting money that you could save. Of course that means you won't be leaving near Bellevue or thereabout...
