I just painted a clients exterior stairwell....one day, white paint, two coats, job done...client happy.......now doing my own exterior wall....no fuss, no scaffolding and generally just not making a meal of it. The Swiss are good diligent workers.....but boy do they overegg the pudding!
We had our house painted last year. 2 coats on the timber sidings, in a totally different color to the original. All shutters stripped and repainted in 2 coats. All scaffolding included. All eaves painted as well. CHF 12,000 for a 3 story stand alone house. Kanton Schwyz. Job took about 7 days total, although scaffolding stayed up for about 3 weeks. 2 painters and sometimes a 3rd. Included them covering up all windows & frames to avoid overspray (although with mixed results on success for that). Hope it helps.
I know painters who use no scaffolding. I watched them paint a 3 storey house using ladders. When my painter wanted to set up scaffolding in the stairway I was a bit surprised as I thought a ladder could work. He told me that if there was an accident and it was discovered that scaffolding was not used, he said there would be trouble for him with the accident coverage.
I agree with getting several quotes but ask for references and go and look at the work. Also, if it is the inside of the house, you will get a better price in the winter when painters are not as busy with outside work.
Oh, and it also included painting 2 exterior doors, and 2 double sized garage doors. The painter dude said it should last for 10 years before needing to be redone again (we lived at 1100m above sea level and get 6 feet of snow lying about in a good year).
Interestingly, he (the Swissy painter dude) was adamant that we should paint our timber house in a dark color - apparently it withstands the summers and winter extremes better and lasts longer. I have no research to substantiate that though....
We have just had our 4-storey house painted without scaffolding. Instead a "cherry picker" was used. I don't know the proper term for this bit of kit, but it considerably brought our costs down. Our house is attached and our share will be around CHF 12,000. This is less than some of our neighbours paid. We are very pleased with the result and the workmanship. Naturally I would be happy to pass the name of the company on if anyone is interested (our house is in Staefa).
That's a good idea. Unfortunately for us, because of trees etc, we could only get access to two sides with one of those (aerial work platform, apparently).
I'm thinking (only thinking) of doing ours but buying a scaffold tower for the job. My ladder won't reach the top in some places and in those places, it's very suitable ground for a scaffold tower.
It's probably one of those jobs that if I start doing it, it will take far longer than I thought it would and be a lot more painful.
I imagine it would, but less painful on the wallet no doubt despite the purchase of a scaffold tower. Our job took 11 days with 2 men working full-time. Good luck with yours!
get pleanty of coats(quotes),i got several for a new heating the system, the cheapest ,was less than half of the most expensive, 16k, against 37 k, for the same job and materials and make of boiler,
or advertise for it on renovate.ch, jusz make sure any one man band is all insured and registered, they come down on you like a ton of bricks if you employ black labour(rightly so, we are guests, play by the rules)
So this is finally what happened. We found a guy from Canada who had just moved to Switzerland to be with his girlfriend, said he had had a painting business and was in the process of opening his own GmBH in Switzerland. So we negotiated 14K for the whole job including materials. He came and went over a period of about a month, put down 3 coats including eaves. Turns out he didn't need scaffolding, he did is all with a long extension pole. More or less happy with it, he did mess up a couple spots by not matching the color exactly to the first coat. Downside: when it came time to get a receipt for tax deduction purposes, he never sent it. Said repeatedly he would send one, but never did. Turns out he was working black and didn't want to be discovered. Wouldn't do it again.

lesson learned, always ask to see papers first, get a written quote that displayys all hes business credentials,
i often get asked to do black work,it goes against my principles, (you are in someone elses country, respect it), the nearest i have ever go to it ,is building a wall for free,in return for a take away and a beer,
if everyone worked black, and did not pay their taxes, where would we be ,,, not in switzerland,as it is a well oiled machine ,and that oil is from tax,if you dont like it, move to greece or africa, where i hear it is perfectly okay to avoid tax,......have you ever wondered why there are so many greeks etc (and me ), working here, just getting on, paying our way
