How to change a school to a closer one?

My child is 8, she will join the local school as of august. There are several primary schools in our village, and she was assigned to one that's far away (school bus needed)

, while there is another one within 5 min walking distance from us.

I am concerned that she will have no classmates from the neighbourhood and will not make any friends (a shy kid), and having kids living around is very important.

Can I ask to move her to a closer school before she even started? Whom should I ask - commune, school director or?

Your commune decides which school she will attend. It may be a simple matter of there being no spaces in the schools closer to you which is why she’s been assigned to that particular school.

I know, and would still like to try. It won't hurt. So I should write to commune, right?

You can always ask but don’t pin your hopes on your request being accepted.

If the nearest school is oversubscribed it’s likely there will be other kids from nearby also travelling on the bus to school with her so she’ll still make friends and learn a lot about being independent at the same time.

Write and ask, give good reasons and you may be pleasantly surprised

I have asked on the fb page - this allocation seems to be rare - that is why I doubt finging classmates nearby.

I do not have many hopes, but need to try.

they often change allocations from year to year. For example for years, kids in my road went to one of 3 primaries in our town. Years. Then one year a few of them were allocated to another (maybe 3) with the rest all being allocated to the usual one. It seemed really unusual and all us parents of older kids were saying "oh this never happens" but when they appealed it was really simple - two new buildings very close to the original school had been completed and let and the kids from these new apartments were allocated the original school putting our road (and the two below) into the maybe one school, maybe the other group - which had not happened for many years.

As you say all you can do is try to appeal - but just because in recent past this is not how it has been done does not mean the authorities will reallocate you.

I assume it’s the same elsewhere, but at least in Zurich, you’ll have to write a letter in German requesting and justifying a school allocation change within 5 days.

You need to act quickly and write a nice letter saying you want her to integrate, walk to school alone with the neighborhood kids etc. If she already has any friend locally mention that.
