How to choose new appliance

Dryers kill clothing.

I use laundry racks. A smaller foldable one and a large one for bed linen etc.

I have the space and a ventilated Minergie apartment, so I don’t think about moisture and mold.

I have a long fence in front of a part of my South Windowdoors - that is hwere my linnen is hanging in the sun right now.

That sounds quite the entitled post.

Not everyone has a ventilated Minergie apartment.

Many families with children (hence much more washing) do not have that luxury and do need to worry about mildew and mould.

“Dead clothing” isn’t a problem for them as most kids grow out of clothes before they wear out - even if they get handed down to siblings (more than once).

Oh, I know.

In my rental, I used the Secomat that was in the basement, thankfully.

A room with an air dryer? (Raumluft-Wäschetrockner). It’s great.

And, not many people uses it in the apartment building, always free.

Secomat is a great thing. But very expensive. Our first apartment here had one.

Apparently top loaders are more aggressive on wash than front loaders, but driers are more aggressive than either.

And yes, fabric softener/conditioner should not be used on towels. I don‘t use it at all. It makes stuff smell funny after a while.

My towels are machine dried and they are fine. I use a little lavender oil on a cloth in the dryer and everything smells fresh. If I get 10-15 years out of a towel, I am happy.

Amen - I hardly used a dryer until we got ankle biters.

We just got our Miele 9kg washing machine…so far it’s a dream. Only prob is it is 400V 2 phase..makes power monitoring more complicated.

I suspect Curley is talkng about something different to an old style top loader. There is a class of small washing machine you load into a vertical drum (just like a front loader drum) but through a flap in the side of the drum. Apart frm the loading in all aspects like a front loader. Useful in small spaces like bathrooms, we had one years ago when we rented a flat.

wow, this thing is cheap!

Yes, you are perfectly right, Flakk. Mine is Electrolux and I think - I’ve had it so long I don’t remember - it’s “only” 6 kilos.

Turbo diesel? I swear I read VW 1.4 TDI

Currently day deal at Galaxus-Digitec

They have a few Beko products on offer in Aldi this week including washers and dryers.

Even original price of Fr. 699.-- is dead cheap.
Is this really the price of washing machines now-a-days??

edit: I had lost interest in this thread - grave mistake :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: - so now I went back up on it a bit.
Phil_MRC having 19 years of experience with Beko is the kind of thing one convinces me with. I’ll definitely look at that brand one day.

But my Electrolux is also still going strong for 14 years.

I think the day deal was a dryer.

you’re right, it was.
Still dead cheap

edit: I just checked Galaxus for what would be today’s replacement for mine and it is also only Fr. 580.
This stuff costs nothing anymore … I paid 1500 in 2011 and this new one is even class A.
I’m truly surprised, not having had to look for such things for so long time.
And neither Beko nor Electrolux is Chinese.

This was my parents’ Electrolux vacuum cleaner from the early 50s. It was still going strong in the late 80s when my sister had it, and it probably lives on somewhere else!

An therein lies the problem…bulit in obsolescence, throw it away instead of fixing it.

That sentence doesn’t make sense to me at all.
Phil_MC says his machine is 11 years old and still happily running.
To be honest, the only machines I had (dishwashers) that ran 32 years and could still be fixed if it wern’t for the spare parts “only” produced for 30 years was V-Zug. And they don’t come cheap.

If my washing machine (14 years running so far) dies in the coming years and it’s more than some plastic hose or a seal I will thank it for it’s great service and send it to appliance’s heaven. And not feel guilty one bit either.

I fixed my Electrolux drier with the electric motor from an otherwise broken V-Zug machine. It was an identical part.

Okay, perhaps my sentence lacked context. Basically repairs cost more than buying new stuff these days for many things.
The obsolescence isn’t in the quality, but the price or features. For example, many people will buy a new appliance if it has an app or smart phone connection.
