How will the tax office pay money back?

Hey guys, a stupid question but...

For the first time ever, we received a letter from the tax office for our 2019 tax declaration, saying that we paid 5000 CHF more. I nowhere managed to find information how to actually get this money:

- will they be paid automatically to a bank account of mine (I suppose they have my bank information)?

- do I need to send something to the tax office?

- I have heard that getting your money back might take a while. How much is a while in an average case?

I tried to call them, but they seem unreachable.

They pay to the bank account you listed when you filed your taxes.

And yes, it can take months, it can take years (especially in ZRH when you file for the first time).

Thanks!

Alternatively you can give them a call and instruct them to use it as partial prepayment for this year's taxes.

Depends on the Gemeinde, in mine they normally send a letter where they communicate the amount and there is also a form to fill out with the bank account where do you want to money back

In Vaud we fet a letter that details their ‘final’ decision which states the IBAN number they will credit. I think we have a couple of weeks to change that. Of course they could be asking for more money and then we get a Orange payment slip.

We went into our local gemeinde finance office, explained we had overpaid, gave them the iban number and got the money paid into our account within 10 days.

In fact every year we get a refund

Our tax consultant was notified and we were asked for the IBAN ( we have several bank accounts ) of the account into which we wanted the money to come. Money was received within 2 days of our providing the info.

Are you sure the letter doesn't ask for the IBAN?

Thank you all for the replies. No, the letter does not include an IBAN, so I will give them a call and figure it out

I just called them and they told me that normally they will deduct it from next year's taxes, but if I want they can also pay it to my bank account. Which I asked them to do. Since we are on permit B and pay tax on source (I think this is how it is called), this seems more reasonable to me. Besides we have two small kids now and pay loads for Kita and other expenses but always get deducted the same taxes. In other words, I can hardly imagine a situation we will be asked for to pay them more money, rather than the other way around. Hope I am not wrong.
