If they were fitted with Belisha beacons they were called zebra crossings (the poles had stripes that matched the road markings).

They had Belisha beacons (1934) before they had stripes on the road and not until they put the stripes on the road in 1951 did they became zebra crossings. (and this I DO remember)
Many intersection in Zurich use green arrows instead of a regular color circle to indicate green forward or green left and the same on the other side of the intersection. However imagine that you are waiting for green to go left and you receive a green arrow to the left. On the other side of the intersection they will receive a green arrow forward which can result in an accident in the middle f the intersection. In the USA a green arrow means you have the right of way and the opposite side has red.
