Import and insurance for the motorcycle

Hi, All

I just moved from the USA to AG and import my motorcycle (Aprilia SHiver 900).

I would better say in process of importing it. It appears that there is no way of getting a COC cert for this bike, at least this is what I was told by the manufacturer. Still waiting for an answer from a strassenverkehrsamt Argau...

But now I am wondering about proper insurance. Is there any reason to add Accident insurance to the motorcycle policy?

I thought that since I am insured by the employer through SUVA I don't need any accident coverage. But maybe I am wrong?

Will appreciate any advice on this.

You don't need extra accident insurance.

Expect to pay around CHF 1500 to get it tested, however.

thanks for the reply, yeah, saw your comment on the test price... is this for noise or noise + exhaust?

Should I arrange this test with an Aprilia garage or there are some independent testers?

Also, it appears that US international motorcycle insurance covers only Canada....

Wonder if I will get swiss insurance can I still ride on US plates? The first year?

The test has to been done at a special place, there are only one or two in Switzerland, a good dealer can arrange it.

I did ride for a year with US plates, the problem was to find insurance.

I got a 1320A form with a Stammnummer, it seems that getting insurance is not a problem

but not sure if it is legally correct to ride on US plates in this case.

Would you mind sharing which insurance you used?

i also got an offer for "green card insurance" from an Italian company but they ask 250euro/month for it....

but they just copied the same as on the website.

asked for a bit more details and now waiting.

suggests it might have been in the 2017 local line up...

When you say the manufacturer can’t help, have you contacted http://www.ofrag.ch/

What reason did they give for no CoC?

It’s sold across the EU and April’s has a repository of coC’s.

Or is the US spec different to EU?

I guess they are identical, maybe some minor changes on what sticker/number plates are used and in which language.

But all this COC is a legal thing, and not necessarily linked to actual differences... But it's my guess.

Also for passenger cars, they accept EPA stickers from the US but not sure if it is the same for motorcycles.

If you are insured, it is perfectly legal.

I got a "green card insurance" from Wintherthur for free, but that was 35 years ago! (the alternative to free was CHF 10 / day, so I went for "free")

I got Swiss plates after 10 months finally.

Have you moved the bike to CH yet ? If not, I would strongly consider selling it in the US and buying a new one here.

Hi all,

Yesterday I got my new registration and Swiss plates for the motorcycle imported from the US.

The process appeared to be not too difficult.

I will summarize and post it here. Who knows, it might be helpful for others...
