Importing car - proof of 6 months ownership?

According to the U.S. CBP you just need the MSO https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/det...%20the%20title . No need to title it first. O.K. You can not ride it to the port, but you will have a brand new bike back here.

People that ship bikes:

https://www.gravelroadlogistics.com/...dverschiffung/

http://www.intime-ham.com/

http://www.berlinmotors.de/verschiffung_24.html

Heard that sometimes it is cheaper to ship out from the west coast instead of east coast or gulf.

In Swiss speck: No "Code 178" on the gray card.

Lot's of good information, thank you. Now as a shipping company will bring the car to Ticino, Locarno, I will not not personally DRIVE the car through custom and therefore nearly impossible to get a Grenzversicherung. Therefore I am trying to have insurance BEFORE the car is shipped ( which is paid in full and I have title ) , but on line and even talking to some people ( like Geico europe ) have yet to find a company that will insure my car which will have NC license plates on entry to CH. Any ideas anybody??

No, that's not true.

I had my bike airfreighted to Zurich, and that's what I got.

Tom

Is the car being driven? When yes get the frontier insurance at the country where the port of entry is (Italy, Germany, France, Belgium the Netherlands etc.). If it is not driven, you can get it later in Switzerland just before the car is put on public roads. Be aware, without a valid insurance it must be stored on private property. Really do not see your problem.

OK I see your point. However , my car will be the only means of transportation and will have to be insured asap. How can I find out which Company in Ticino, Locarno to be specific, who WILL insure my car with NC license plates. I rather find out before the move rather then get the runaround once I am there. Have been searching on the net for days now with no clear answers.

I used AXA-Winterthur, but that was 31 years ago!

Tom

3rd party liability insurance? No other option then a frontier insurance as long as you have US plates. The one from Italy is a bit cheaper then the Swiss one.

The frontier insurance is all you need to be legally on the road (plus customs From 13.20b and Form 15.30, plus a valid driving license )

Other coverage such a theft, collision etc? Try Zurich.

I just do not understand why you not want switch to Swiss plates. Want to feel a bit special? Then you have to take the pill and get the expensive frontier insurance.

Look up the a customs office which suits you best and give them a call (during Swiss business hours) and ask them what documents you will need.

I actually got my green card for free from Winterthur for 2x 3 months!

Tom

I know. And you should know it is no longer possible.

Edit: No longer possible, if the car has a plate from a green card state.

Maybe that now applies to any foreign plated car.

Ok, thanks. I probably will drive the car with NC plates from Locarno to Camorino without insurance and hope not to get arrested and switch to TI plates.

Hope not be involved in an accident. Better forget that stupid idea and get the insurance. If an accident with a bicycle can incur costs of up to CHF 40 000, what do you think will a car accident cost?

But I do want to get insurance asap. Cannot drive car anywhere without insurance. OK, get that. Car has NC license plates in order to be shipped. The one and only thing I would like to know WHICH car insurance in Locarno is willing to insure a car with USA plates. It's not that a difficult question and a bit hard to find out from the USA and probably easier to find out from somebody on this forum actually living in CH. That's the main reason I am on this forum. And I am willing to switch to TI plates asap, but if I am correct car has to be inspected in Camorino and the only way to get there is driving the car.

You were named to companies: Zurich and AXA-Wintherthur.

Just give them a call and look what they can do for you:

https://www.axa.ch/en/

https://www.zurich.ch/en

If all fails you know you can get the insurance from customs:

Here again the contact details for that: https://www.nbi-ngf.ch/pdf/liste_der...ember_2015.pdf

Now it is time for me to put the spoon to the side, you take the training wheels of and start using the telephone and make some calls.

As you are in the US drop the 0 from a phone number and instead call 01141- or +41- (the later works on mobile phones)

smile-direct.ch. And he can do it all online = now.

The license plate on the car is of no interest to them. The only thing I'm not sure of is: Can you get insurance on a car which is not imported yet? Or will it be officially imported by the company that brings it in?

smile will send all the info to the "Strassenverkehrsamt" (office where you get license plates) directly. All you do is go there with the car papers, pick up your number plates and the new, Swiss car papers, go where your car is, put them on and drive off.

And if they let you know that you can't do it before you and your car is actually in Switzerland, they are very quick, you can get coverage within two days if needed.

Ok thanks a lot, best regards

Ok, thanks a lot, useful information. best regards

That's all fine and all but have you ever called a shipping company to ship a motorcycle you were about to buy?

It's a big no with a new title. Maybe if you ship in your own container, but not as freight.

I'll look into that but then there is the added expense of getting to those places and buying there or shipping it to the port.

I'd actually like to see the bike before I buy it.

All my tools are metric so I have no interest in getting one . The only one I would be interested in would have an old title as it is from the 1940s.

But tell me what is the problem there? At least it looks like in time will do it: http://www.intime-ham.com/motorrad-one-way-usa.html

i'd like one of those as well! Good luck finding a MOS for that.

The problem I found was the "authentication of documents'. The shipping company needs to authenticate the docs and new titles take time which could hold up the boat and they were having none of that. So spontaneous purchases on a two week trip are a not a good plan.

I could have bought it, stored it, the shipped it at another time. But the cost was crazy. You lose the savings really. The only thing is you have more choice. Of course, I could buy 6 and get my own container. I know Tom wants one.

You mean MSO? Considering how simple the law was back then you can put nearly anything on the road as long as it is original. The only thing what is importnant that you have a document which shows when the baby the very first time hit the road.

I am not sure but from reading the "in time" description they collect the bikes and ship when ready and space on a boat is available. May be give them a call and discuss the option for your next "shopping trip"?
