In Ticino the Indian would be the best in the world ever and for a 1/10th of the price of the cheapest place in Zurich - and cook Tom his own very special curry on Lobster and Kobe Beef.
In Geneva they charge you 400chf for a COOP Indian starter platter (insufficiently warmed), half a chicken breast cooked in Pataks "Rogan Josh Curry Sauce", a portion of rice and a bottle of Singha (because to the Swiss owner Thai and Indian food is all the same spicy muck!!!!)
And there is an Indian restaurant in Villeneuve where the food is at best mediocre, where the service is slow, albeit reasonably friendly but the price, for what you get, is outrageous.
Yep, I don't like to spend much more then two quid fifty on a plate of steamed rice. If it was an expenses paid trip I'd be there like a flash and that btw, has never happened.
I really want to eat a curry out in Zürich, but I haven't found a good Indian restaurant but I have tried a few that I would not return to. If anyone has a strong tip, that isn't going to cost a 150 Chufs a head I might give it a go.
There is the Indian Street Food hole in the wall on Langstrasse (Limmatquai side and next to the Thali Restaurant) the lamb curry is quite nice, but the menu is limited and its buffet style, although 14.- for a portion with rice is definitely good value for a Zürich lunch, if you don't mind sitting on a bench outside, but its best in the summer for the obvious reason that cold curry tastes much better at breakfast
Pakistani food and North Indian cuisine is basically the same...so that's negligible.
There is of course so much more Indian food to explore such as South Indian, West Indian, Bengali cuisine and the list goes on...
Most of what you find in Zurich is North Indian, there are some South Indian spots...the only one I've found to be decent is Shaanti in Interlaken where they offer freshly made Dosai.
I ate at Vulkan once and didnt like it, service was awful, food wasnt very good and it was way too expensive.
Street food window on langstrasse is great!! Its cheap, the food is really simple but decent!
I think Neela (Sri Lankan) is really really nice.
Otherwise just learn to cook some dishes. Its probably better than most restaurants in zh. The maharajah indian supermarket on Josefstrasse sell really nice frozen naan.
The indian restaurants are only worth it when you go in a group of people-min 4. Then each person orders a different dish-and one simply shares from each dish.
Heres one in Zurich. Never been there but alot of Indian tour groups go here to eat.
I agree that Chalet is an amazing Indian restaurant. They have a buffet every Sunday and you have to book well in advance because it’s really popular with the expats.
For the last year I've been going to Tadka on Quellenstrasse (K5). For me the best Indian food I've had in Switzerland (but I haven't been to Chalet India in Horgen which i have heard is good). Tadka is always full and for warm evenings they have a fantastic garden terrace (it used to be Anthony's Kitchen). And most evenings you will find Indian families visiting from India eating there!
A couple of years ago I had one of the worst Indian meals I have ever had at Chalet Horgen at a lunch buffet. It was not great quality and they were incredibly slow to replace empty dishes.
