Insurance for baby born outside Switzerland

Dear All,

I would like to know whether my friend's baby get insurance in Switzerland. My friend is living in Switzerland and he have residence permit in Switzerland, but his wife and baby are living in Germany and they have only German residence permit and German health insurance (AOK). During their visit in Switzerland, can they consult Doctors in Switzerland for his baby with free of cost? Do they need to apply insurance card in Switzerland for their baby?

They need Swiss insurance only if they live here.

If German insurance will pay anything in Switzerland is something that they need to ask their German insurance.

No. They need to check if their German health insurance will cover the visit to Switzerland, if not they need travel insurance.

They asked German health insurance and they said its only possible to claim in emergency situations.

So their question, is it legally possible to take insurance in Switzerland and for baby I don't think they have to pay much and my friend would like to pay this along with his insurance?

How long are they going to be here? Why do they think they will need non-emergency treatment? Swiss health insurance will only be possible if they register as living in Switzerland.

Where do they live? If not far from Germany they could pop back over the border for required check-ups.

The below link indicates that non-employed family members of a legal resident of Switzerland who live Germany can elect to have either German health insurance or Swiss health insurance (German):

His baby need some treatments and his wife is not able to take care of their baby alone. So they are planning to take insurance in Switzerland and they have plans to move to Switzerland, but it can take some time. Until that they have to treat their baby in Switzerland

No, they are not resident and even if they were the insurance is limited because the state is responsible of a lot issues for children born here.

I disagree. According to the link in my post above, legal residents of Switzerland with non-working family members in Austria, Germany , Finland, France and Italy, can elect to have health insurance in the country of residence or Switzerland. Translation:

"Persons with residence in an EU/EFTA state and covered by health insurance

Right of choice

Country of residence or

Switzerland

Not gainfully employed

Family members of:

- cross-border commuter

- pensioner

- unemployed persons

- short-term resident (L), resident (B), permanent resident (C)

But that would then mean them losing the cover in Germany, no? And since they already have German health insurance would they be able to change it?
