I will soon move into a new rented apartment in Switzerland and the contract states that I must have household contents insurance and private tenant liability insurance. I currently have personal liability insurance, but not household contents insurance.
I asked the agent why I need both and they said it was to cover the event of, for example, me burning the kitchen down whilst cooking, as the kitchen fixtures and appliances are belonging to the landlord.
My question is wouldn't my personal liability insurance already cover such a scenario?
I don't want to get to get household contents insurance unless it's really necessary, although I do see the benefit of me covering my back in case there's a leaking roof from upstairs that destroys mine and my landlord's stuff.
