Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

For last few days my Swisscom speed has been consistently down from 4500/550 kbit/s to 1599/400 kbit/s What the hell is that all about?

I certainly am. However, I was told by cablecom that they will be upgrading the infrastructure in my area on 3rd march, (tomorrow). So I will let you know how things are then. At the moment, 5mb is the ceiling, with it being far less most of the time.

I've had a Cablecom connection since September 2005. To my knowledge I've only had one outage, and in that one, the radio and TV signals were also out of action.

CC have improved their service considerably. I have been with them since 1999 and then they dropped out almost daily. In 2002 they had a three day outage (TV unaffected) and actually gave a discount on that month's subscription.

I have to say that it must now be 12 months since I last recall losing the internet.

Well here we are after the magical infrastructure upgrade, and things are........crap.

If anything it is slower now, with downloads hitting more of a 1 meg cieling, and even cablecom's own performance test gives me 4 meg download, (on a supposedly 25 meg line).

Cablecom have given me a free upagrade to 5Mb (from 3.5) and for an extra 20 CHF a month I can whack it up to 25Mb. I'll stick with the 5Mb though.

Sorry if that has been covered already, but couldn't find anything with the search function...

Has anybody checked the new offer from Sunrise yet - the all-in-one (home phone/mobile/internet) deal they offer? I was wondering what your esteemed thoughts were on that... I have so far not even had a phone at home, so this would be a good starter pack for me..

Just want to pick your minds on that one if possible....

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

Al

you mean this: http://freeinternet.ch/default-de.aspx

seems that you take the phone and mobile for 55 francs or more per month and can have ADSL for free. It's a confusing read, to be honest....

Hi

This is off the topic you folks have engaged in, but not entirely. We are moving to an apartment for a few months. The apt. has cable TV but no internet. Since we are there only for a short time, we are reluctant to subscribe to cablecom for a full year. In Germany, the phone companies have internet modems that run off wireless you can get for 3-month contracts. Does anything like that exist here? And is it cost-effective? Or should we just suck it in and pay for a whole year of cable for only 3 months?

thanks in advance for your advice

Leaving an address is a legitimit reason for breaking a contract so I see no reason why you would have to pay for a whole year.

But we are subletting and would be using our landlord's contract. Unless we got our own for the period? Hmmmm. Thanks for the idea, if it is true we could break the contract after 3 months.

Felicia

You cannot conclude a contract in his name. If you have a legal permit, then your name will be on the Cablecom contract, and leaving is normally enough to break it, but check Cablecom terms and conditions to be sure.

I will be living in St Gallen-SG. What are the typical install times for high-speed internet? Bluewin & Cablecom? Any others to consider? Can you self-install? Or will the infrastructure typically prevent that and require the ISP to send someone out for installation?

I've heard of horror stories with certain buildings unable to handle high-speed internet without a significant infrastructure installation fee. How can you determine this before you sign on the dotted line when the apartment is vacant or no one know? Are you just taking a chance? Thanks and look forward to hearing from all of you!

For Swisscom (aka Bluewin) just ring them and ask.

Just politely ask if you can speak english with someone and if not, they'll transfer you.

My internet connection was up in 3 (4?) working days, punctuated by a weekend. It seemed that it would have only taken two days, except that the previous tenant had an ISDN line connected and something physical had to be done at the exchange.

Landline phone && internet was too easy.

cheers,

Wibble

You should be able to go to the Swisscom website and see if the address can get ADSL. You should look at the Cablecom website as well.

When we moved, Swisscom had our ADSL working pretty much from the day we'd taken over the flat.
