Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

how do kings live anyway?

Just to warn you. There are more than 100 threads with the advice you want to know. Just to avoid a repetition of this whole thing

But what the previous poster said about parking in geneva is true. Is next to impossible to park at noon somewhere in geneva. Unless you count the train station and that costs 20chf for 4 hours

What rot! many Swissies do live well on a lesser salary and would be delighted to get 120k. You however have to quantify it against your current standard of living, at which point the wheels may or may not fall off.

If you entertained the notion that the cost of living between here and UK allows for a direct comparison.... watch the ground coming up quick as you'll be hitting it with a bump.

Ask my other half for that

Frankly: 120K for a one person household and still unsure?

=> you are not ready for the move. It's not about monay.

In which case you will either have to park it out of town (like near the UN for example) or you will need to find an apartment with underground parking space included (which will limit your choices further and add to the cost by around 300 per month. Plus you will need to switch it over to Swiss plates within one year.

if you don't trust them, then you should stop thinking about the new positions. If you think that they are desperately looking for your profile/skill, and you want to live like a king, then make a counter offer at 130-150 kchf.

At the end it's not a matter of money and king lifestyle, it's about the working and social environment. Ask yourself if you are ready to adapt to a new country, new culture, new language and environment. Your "entrée en matière" in this forum shed a light on your ability to cope with a new environment.

which means watch out for another "how do I change my licence plates" thread...

LOL....Sorry I blinked and missed that one, but I'm sure they asked there mum's permission to play outside.

Will that be before or after the: I want an apartment, curtains, and brown sugar threads.

No bonus?

120K base salary should include somewhere in the region of 10 - 15% bonus on top in the contract.

Plus some pension fund contributions from the employer on top of that, money that you can cash in when you leave CH at a very low tax rate (save as much as you can in the pension scheme).

Plus Chamonix, Verbier, Port du Soleil within a 2 hour drive to mention only a few.

What is important to YOU (besides money)?

There are other aspects to my move I am concerned about I have to admit. But primairily I wanted to get a monetary Q&A sesson going here on this thread. Hence the way the question was phrased. It is true they did say the "King" bit. I neither prompted or canvassed for it. So the phrase surprised me. Hence my being on this site today.

I do not trust HR people either... so it completely ok to question bullshit information as "you can live like a king". But honestly: Why are you all jumping at this thread? It is easily the 100th thread on exactly 120k CHF a year and what does this tell us? It is the standard going rate for people with a degree, a sought after skill and five years experience, which seems to be the average of all young expats in Zurich and Geneva.

To the OP: You are offered nearly twice the average income of a Swiss family, so you will not starve. But yes, Geneva is probably more expensive than the UK, but if you are serious with the question if this can only afford you a student lifestyle, I really wonder what student lifestyle you had. I survived on some hundreds a month...

Well I was living like a "king" on 80K a year (nice car, nice flat, eating out every lunch time, eating out in the evenings 4x a week andf going to the cinema a coupe times a week), sure you can get loads of expenses that will weigh you down, it's also about living smart, where to shop for food and clothes, the restaurants you can eat well at without spending a fortune, learn some quick and easy recipes you can do at home.

Now it's obvious if living like a king for you means driving around in a bentley, ordering magnums of vodka and champagne each time you go out, buying a yaht in St Tropez and going on holiday to the four seasons in Bali 5 times a year, buying the latest designer outfits for 5'000 chf each week then sure 120K a year is not enough. all depends on your lifestyle!

Are they really that many contracts that guarantee a bonus in the contract. I thought most companies would just give you somewhat of an expectation, but you can't absolutely rely on it. That's always the carrot on the stick they promise you.

Q: Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

A: Yes.

Q: Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

A: Not for what you do, it's clearly a rip off

Q: Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

A: Way above what you deserve

Etc.

How are we to know if it's good? Did you mean 'Can I live on that?'?

Don't compare your UK salary with the expected pot in Geneva. Things are different and they're not offering you much of a pay rise, they're offering a comparable salary if you do decide to move here.

Welcome to EF. We aim to please.

your after tax salary is about 7200chf. The basics would cost you about 3500chf max (2000chf - 2 or 2.5 room flat, 500chf for good health insurance, 1000chf for office lunches and super market shopping). Then you are left with 3700chf in your hand, now list your 'live like king' bits and see if this is enough

I believe 120K CHF is noticably higher than 45K GBP even taking into account the cost of living differences.

You can't live the same way (cheaper to go skiing, or to get to, say, Italy; more expensive to eat out) but assuming you are open to changes you should find you have money left at the end of each month.

With the exchange rate as it is, you can send that back to the UK and you'll end up saving more than you would staying on 45K in the UK.

I have no "live like a King" bits. It was told to me by the destination HR department.

Ask them to clarify which specific king they were referring to.

My guess, this one:
