Is it worth driving to Paris?

A couple of years ago did we discuss the same option and when I researched back then were a lot of the things we wanted to do actually closed. Most museums for example. We did not go, so I cannot comment on it other than that you need to check opening times of what you want to do... the town does seem to get into some sort of sleep mode during the holidays.

OK, lemme see.

- potentially long, boring drive that could take much longer than planned

- toll charges along the way

- breathalyzer requirement

- traffic jams in the city

- extortionist parking fees

- museums may be closed

- probable bad weather

- expensive hotels

I think we just decided to re-schedule this idea to Spring or Summer.

And then we take the train.

Thanks, all.

LOL. See go to Munich. Or at least look into it. You might have the same sleepy town issues.

Why Paris in particular? Do you want to do something specific?

You could also get to Vienna or Prague in a similar time from Zurich.

Cheaper roads, possibly cheaper hotels - and very "Christmassy"

In my opinion, anyhow.

no breathaliser requirement until march 2013

Have done it several times. Take the train...it's much easier.

We've done this several times and it can be lots of fun on New Year's eve.

I'd suggest you forget the car and take the TGV.

There's many wonderful places to visit with teens like: la Cité de la Science as well as la Musée Grevin (historical wax museum) and of course the Louvre (1 full day minimum).

Find a nice restaurant just off the Champs Elysées for New Year's Eve and join the crowd for midnight.

....... and from a woman's point of view, the clothes shopping is awesome just after Christmas as it's the pre-sales.

Really worth the journey.

nb. decent priced hotels may be found right near the Gare de Lyon (the station where the Swiss TGVs arrive)

Yes, and it's very over-priced.

If you've been to Orlando, you've been to EuroDisney

It's a good decision to go when the weather is nice and everything's green because then you can actually drive through the countryside, which is lovely (and has the added bonus you avoid lots of fees).

I just came back from paris to see my family for christmas and we took the TGV from Zurich, it was 4 hours and the trip was ok, it was a bit difficult to find our seats but once you get there, it's fine. I don't recommend driving in Paris (and also out) because of the traffic jam and the difficulty to find a parking place in the center. You have traffic everywhere in Paris, getting from the Champs-Elysees to the Eiffel tower can take ages. It took us 2 hours 10 min to drive from Evry to Disneyland Paris.

By the way, I know Prague very well and it's a beautiful city, a lot more than Paris in my opinion. The public transportation there is great and it's one of the safest cities in the world.

We paid 110 euros roundtrip for 2 but we ordered a month in advance.
