Is this a tick bite?

When my husband was bitten by a tick (unbeknownst to him) and he contracted Lyme’s disease it looked nothing like that but although the classic bullseye rash is usually associated with Lyme disease it’s not always present.
It would be worth getting him checked out and started on a course of antibiotics if necessary as Lyme disease can present itself in many different ways.

Usually but not always.

And not immediately. It takes a couple of days to appear.

Looks like a tick bite. I had one 5 years ago. Never saw the tick just a very red shoulder with typical ring. Took about 3 weeks to fade away. I have the tick vaccine for years - it lasts 10 years and only protects part of what you can get.

Anyway, nothing happened. I didn’t get Lyme - named after a town in America…

I got back from the doctor, they thought it was not Lyme disease but couldn’t be sure and so recommended that we keep an eye on it to see if grows over the next days.

Given the rather aggressive antibiotic treatment required for Lyme disease, we thought it better to wait and see and hope it turns out to be something else.

Everyone over the age of 6 as it’s not recommended for children under 6 so Phil’s kids may be too young for it yet.
Geneva and Tessin are not considered high risk areas for ticks but I would still recommend getting it even for people living there.

Have had a tick removed by the doctor (after our failed attempts). Am FMSE vaccinated. A Lyme disease vaccine, VLA 15 is in phase 3 trials at the moment, apparently there is not so much commercial interest: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12115198/
so it is a matter of insect repellent, covering up when it is not too hot and inspections in the evening

Found a pic of my tick bite:

It doesn’t look like Lyme infected tick bite. Just a normal bite.

Indeed true, I remember many news articles back then…
A Lyme vaccine is possible, but 25 years ago was deemed not worth investing (without the USA on board, they thought, it is not viable). But things have changed in Europe since, there is a lot more Lyme infections.

It is ironic that the human vaccine was abandoned, but if you are a dog you can very well get vaccinated for Lyme.

@AbFab that looks like it was not a fun experience!

Actually I felt nothing. And this is the problem with tick bites. I was surprised to see it in the mirror. The dermatologist said it looked odd but was sure it was a tick. As I was vaccinated, he said hold on and see what happens next. Fortunately nothing happened and it faded away…

Not really, rather a spider or mosquito bite.

Wait and see if he’s got that bull’s eye shape and then immediately go to the doctor.

Actually that’s a classic first stage Lyme’s disease. I hope AbFab got the antibiotics that are usually prescribed - doxyciclyne.

By what signs?

By the way his rash has developed. You can see there’s some sort of red circle around the spot of the bite. The more you wait, the more clear the circle becomes. If I knew I had a tick bite and it developed into that, I’d definitely go to the doctor.

Later edit: I didn’t see the post in which he said the rash has faded away. Either way, it’s interesting the doctor didn’t prescribe antibiotics. I guess he was lucky.

My OH had a very similar thing and he was prescribed antibiotics.

Our son had a similar bite and mark, and the doctor put him on two weeks antibiotics as a precaution.
As the side effects of the antibiotics were minimal, there was nothing to lose with this way forward. Lyme disease on the other hand…

We all have a different experience. I don’t see any sign of the forming bull eye on the photo, just an allergic reaction. Nothing similar with the case we had in the family.

I didn’t see it either in the beginning but within days it became clear it won’t fade away so he booked an appt. with a dermatologist and this guy said it’s Lyme the second he saw the rash.
My OH also remembered feeling a bit feverish that day when we think he got bitten by a tick, plus we’ve been out all day so there were more pieces of info converging to this conclusion.
