Joggers in Zürich

Yep, natural selection for our species was (un)fortunately overruled by technical and scientific advancement various generations ago…otherwise a lot of us wouldn’t be here… (for info: I’m a runner)

Aerobic fitness is the minimum.

There’s evidence out there that pure aerobic sports like swimming or cycling led to lower bone mineral density than people doing other sports where bones are loaded and even inactive people. Some impact, like the one from walking and running, is good for the bones.

Yep. You should incorporate weights into the routine if you are just swimming or cycling. Body resistance exercises a couple of times a week is enough for the average person, though.

Yup! The future is grim.

True - there are lots of things we could/should do to stay healthy.

The funny thing is most of them, in my opinion, are not detrimental to enjoyment in life but enhance it.

Even going to church would be beneficial to mental wellbeing - but much more so if it was a friendly, community-orientated one.
Probably the opposite of what the OP espouses.

That’s not the future. That’s now!

Indeed, I got an office job. I run, walk or ride the bike when I want. Sometimes I get injured. Last time it was a ski fall and I could not run because a knee was not doing well. The office job allows me to work even when injured, so I can wait until it heals. Meanwhile, just walking and the riding the bike in flat roads.

People with physical jobs don’t enjoy this luxury. From construction workers to professional athletes, they have to be back as soon as possible to work. This pressure leads to a collection of unhealed injuries that accumulate along time. From this perspective, I understand the comment of omatstat about people with knee problems.

And in spite of our technological advancement, our bodies still require a minimum set of skills - running, catching a ball etc (I’m talking about children with no physical impairment of course). Could be the fact that when I was a child we didn’t have smart phones etc. so I’m probably having unrealistic expectations from the younger generations (I’m a runner too, I loved running since I was a child, I played handball, volleyball, I can still do pretty well)
