Mormons are extremely nice, unless you try to leave the fold, in which case they're not very nice at all.
I hope those two found a way, they have a tough row to hoe.

Also, please be more careful next time - there are many who would not have reacted so kindly to your "I think you are gay" statement. Luckily Mormons have a reputation of being non-violent.
In Malta I live in a 3/4/5 floor triplex, there is no lift or entry phone. When someone rings the bell, I hang out of the window & ask what the want. They replied "is this the home of the English family" (we being the only English people living in the Street at the time). I replied 'No' & came inside.
A neighbour was more annoying as he got the local priest to pray for our apartment & spray some incense, apparently you are supposed to offer a donation for this 'service', I did not & the priest has never been back
You're certainly right about being very cautious.
In this case, the particular couple had been giggling and flirting right there, on my sofa, (and trying so hard not to gaze lovingly into each others' eyes) during three visits, and also had gained an impression of my world views, (by which they knew, already, that they were in a safe place) before I broached the subject.
In 20 years they've never rang my door bell. But, should they, I'll use an old 'joke' from Seinfeld. I'll say I'm busy but if they could give me their personal home address, I'd be happy to go ring their doorbell when it was convenient for me.
