You decide... except you can't exchange your kids!
Well, how big is the pot?
I've got two Migros-bought pots of basil dying slowly by the window, not sure if I can be much help! But I had success last year growing a pot of basil bought from a garden shop out on the balcony, so it is possible in Switzerland I promise!
I keep my potted basil in the plastic that it comes with and place it in a bowl -- every day, I add some water to the bowl for the soil to suck it all up - keep it at my kitchen window cracked open for a couple hours during the day -- so far, still alive! It's been almost a month and it's doing great!
I have mine since spring and it's doing great. Had to thin it out a bit though, after a couple of weeks, as they put way too many plants in there in my opinion. If you keep it inside, make sure you only water the saucer/bowl as mentionned before, so that the plant takes up as much water as it needs without the earth really getting wet.
There are even special pots you can buy that come with a saucer underneath that is a bit higher than normal ones and fits the pot, so that you don't see the water that's in there. The plants you buy at the store usually don't have very long roots in the beginning, so that these pots come with several strings you can put through the holes up into the earth. Hard to explain. I try to upload a picture. Attachment 88339
You only need to water the saucer every 2-3 days. If you fill it up completely it might last up to a week.
