I have moved to Basel ( Switzerland ) recently with my wife. I have an L-Permit issued to me and my wife has residence permit linked to my L-Permit. This means she can only stay with me & will not have flexibility to take up employment at Basel.
However, she is very keen to work and spend her time more productive. So she is currently looking out for jobs and all her prospective employers are keeping candidature onhold due to the limitation to work using her current residence permit.
Requesting you to please guide or else suggest the means by which we can have her to work in Switzerland . Also please let me know if I have her offer letter from some employer, can I have her L-Permit processed contacting immigration lawyers in Swiss? Please let me know.
As per my understanding, if the propspective employer can offer her a job, we can have dependent`s workpermit processed within a month. When her workpermit is being processed, she can still be in Swiss. Can you please validate it?
Its true that your wife cant work with the resident L permit.
But if her employer applies for a work permit it will take 4 - 6 weeks for the work permit to get approved. No need of going to India for any kind of stamping if she is already in Swiss. As soon as the work permit arrives she has to register with her new WP and start working on the same day of registration.
I was here on a dependant visa and had L type resi permit ... for me it took only 4 weeks. I got my WP last week :-)
I have the same situation. I'm currently based here in Zug, Switzerland. I'm Filipino working on an L permit and through my L permit, my wife and son can stay with me here in Switzerland.
We are hoping that my wife can work here and there are some offers form companies to hire her. What would be the prcocess to go through to get a work permit?
If she gets her work permit and I resigned from my job would that automatically means that I'm now the dependent?
i) For job did ur employer had to prove all the "first Swiss and then EU and then non-EU i.e. you"?
ii) Was that an issue in the interview whether u have a dependent permit, were u specifically asked?
iii) Pardon my asking, but if I may, how highly qualified are u, if the first point I asked is valid. As in which profession or skill set u bring ti Switzerland.
iv) Which canton did your employer apply for work permit, when, and what is the permit you obtained now, L or B ?

My question is quite silly but "Do you need a work permit to work in a major company like Credit Suisse or GE?" or can you work using just a dependent visa?
so to make it clear, even if my wife is holding a dependent visa, the company needs to get her a work permit, from a dependent L permit to a working L permit, like what i'm having right now, right?
Naughty Shorrick is being sarcastic. You do need a permit when working for one of the biggies (inc the gov't or military) but they can be arranged surprisingly quickly.
Absolutely not. A dependent permit is a decision made as the reason for entry not once you are here. You have a permit in your own right. If you resign from work or lose your job you are handled as if you were a single entity apart from the leaving the country part. This is then measured against your spouses income and whether thy would be able to support you. I would however not push this point so if you are thinking of resigning wait until you get a B permit before you do it...
If you are not actually employed here and you have had an L permit then you are not entitled to social benefits. In order to ensure that you will not get into difficulty, the respective authorities will measure your spouses income against the minimum wage for 2 people. If the income falls below the minimum required they will not provide you with a dependent permit which effectively means you have to leave. Your spouse can of course still stay.
