Lightning Protection for Houses

We have had some pretty intense storms lately and I am fairly certain our house does not have lightning protection. In Switzerland this is not mandatory for most private homes. I found the article below (sorry, only in German)

https://energie.ch/hausbau-wie-wicht…r-blitzschutz/

In Ticino building insurance is not offered by the canton so you choose your own provider. I haven’t called ours yet to see if the will share in the cost. It seems in some cases the insurance will contribute.

Has anyone voluntarily installed this on their home?

Who does this installation?

Is it worth doing?

I searched the forum and could not find anything on this topic.

Ben Franklin would say yes.

Have a look around the building, if there is a thick wire or metal strip leading from the roof to the ground then you have protection.

Even a connection from a metal drainpipe to the ground will work

Our (unused) antenna on the roof is connected to a ground cable down a drain pipe. Fortunately we have a number of taller buildings nearby.

He didn’t live in Switzerland.

That's against a direct hit. However if one hits more or less close, that may result in currents "hitting" (inducing current) via the soil and entering your wiring from there. From what I understand that puts your entire connected electronics at risk, your PV system, tv, PC, Tesla, etc.

You just made me wonder about my case.

I am considering buying an electric car. I live in a brand new block of flats on a hill and theoretically, there is a good chance of being struck by lightning. Every parking spot has an electric charger, but I have no idea how it is all protected against short circuits and lightning. I assume this has to be protected somehow, otherwise it would be costly if a lightning strike damaged cars or set them on fire?

Lightning doesn't discrimnate. It will strike anywhere.

Not if it's a Ford Lightning. Or any other car for that matter.

Hire a Kiwi. Get some Number 8 wire. Make a Faraday cage. Simples.

I am pretty sure we don't have anything. The previous owner had lightning strike the electrics for the elevator. That resulted in a huge repair. While it is covered by insurance it would still be better to take measures and avoid the problem.

The loading cable makes your cage non-Faraday, won't it?

Iit's a cost and not mandatory, the landlord or agency should be able to tell.

Not sure, from what I gather underground wiring is protected to an extent

This sarticle recommends a surge protector. Is it something that swiss flats are equipped with?
