With your attitude, you're going to find it very difficult. Fine you got a PhD or whatever, but as you are finding out, this is only a small piece of the puzzle.
As far as i see you don't have much choice and to make statement like this
4. Many super evil companies with terrible environmental records are based here.
Is certainly not going to help.
With your high powered specialist PHD, it's not going to be too diffcult to identify you if HR people read this forum and you happen to appy for a job.
Then count yourself lucky that she does/can. Because if she couldn’t you would be expected by RAV to work in an hotel, etc, so you could earn money! If you can find work in your field that’s fine with them, but their main aim is to get you into work - no matter how “suitable” to your qualification or experience it may be.
And if you’re that desperate to have a paying job I find it strange that you haven’t looked for such work. There’s nothing to stop you resigning later if you find a position where your PhD can be used, but honestly, saying you can’t find a paying job period is a little bit much.
She does not pay a cent for me and I am not with RAV. My finances are my own business. Again you assume that McDonalds would hire me without having fast food experience and 3 languages :P
You may find this very surprising- but I know many firms in the UK and all over, who very rarely take on PhD's- because too many can be, full of big words and hot air, but no common sense and/or oooomph. In the interview- they would want this to be clearly demonstrated not to be the case and that the person has other skills apart from academia.
If this thread is anything to go by, I'd say they have a (serious) point.
Yes, God forbid anyone dare suggest in your publically viewable forum thread that during the last 2 years it may have been a good idea to look for temporary or basic employment and income outside of the niche field that you are your fellow peers struggle to find work in. That would just be silly wouldn't it?
I hope you realise that if on the off chance any employer was reading this thinking to give a PhD student a chance... you've probably blown it by throwing your toys out of the pram like a 12-year old.
