Looking for a Locksmith

I have a unique issue - it seems like the lock to my toiler door is either damaged or then the key I have isn't the right one. I have tried various things already but want a recommendation for a locksmith (or handyman?!) who can either fix this lock, make a new key or then replace it.

As you can imagine, it's a bit inconvenient not to be able to lock the toilet door, especially when you have guests! Before anyone asks about the landlord, I am the landlord so I need to sort this out myself!

Any ideas or recommendations are very welcome!

Have you tried other keys from the house? We have a couple of keys that work in multiple doors.

Also seems like your lock has been painted in, maybe that is what is making it block so perhaps someone who is more handy than me can suggest what to do.

For a locksmith you can Google "Schlüssel Service" and get one in the neighborhood.

I have tried different keys and the paint is actually OK, I did check that too.

It's just that the key doesn't turn in the lock so not sure if it needs another key or something in damaged in the lock. Hence the locksmith.... unless anyone has any other ideas to maybe install another latch of some sort!

Most locks and corresponding keys have a matching number stamped on them.

Have a look for the number. If they both have a number and they don't match then at least you know that you have the wrong key.

If they match then squirt some WD40 in the lock and wiggle the key a bit and see if that frees it.

It does sound like you have the wrong key. Have you just found this out or is the place new to you?

If you're fortunate, somewhere on the lock could be a number, which will then match the number on the key - or not! If it does, it's just a matter of buying a new key.

Otherwise, if you're convinced it's the right key, you could try spraying into the lock with WD40, leaving it for a good hour or so. It has worked for me before.

Otherwise I fear a new lock or else try putting a sliding lock in. I see on google it's called a "schlossriegel" and costs CHF 8.50 from Coop Bau.

I've tried the WD40 option already but unfortunately no luck!

The issue with a sliding latch is that there is a gap between the door and the wall, the width of the door basically. Not sure if I explained that well enough!

Maybe a hook latch works better!

Often, but not always. However, if you can remove the mechanism, just take it to your local hardware store and they will find the key.

This is a RH lock. Have a look around in the house, for a door with a RH lock, which you do not normaly lock closed. Simply change the locks.

Not sure if I am following the story but if the key is in the lock but will not turn it might be that it is in too far / not far enough, so it does not line up with the "slots" to allow it to turn.

Try taking the key out and putting it back in a couple of times while checking which depth allows it to turn. Older door locks/keys can have issues where they are a bit finicky. This might work.

By the way, I would not suggest sewing oil etc. or WD40 in any locks (especially modern ones) as they tend to attract dirt/dust over time and "gum up" the lock. If you want to "lubricate" a lock, buy some graphite powder (Hornbach for sure - Coop/Migros - not sure). You put the nozzle up to the cylinder and puff some graphite powder into the lock.
