Hi, My and my family's Indian passports and Swiss residence permit cards were stolen in the train from Strasbourg to Zurich. I am really pissed at myself for carrying both the documents when one would have been enough. Post the holidays will report the loss to the acnton police as its closed now. 😔

I know that I would need passport for a duplicate permit card application and need permit card copy for new passport application. I'm stuck in a loop. I don't have copy of my son's permit card..

Has anyone been in this situation? Pls help on how you proceeded.

Do you have legible copies? They may be accepted in lieu.

Report it to a police station that is open!

You might not need you passport for a “replacement” permit. A police report of both being stolen might be enough. Also, a letter from the Gemeinde saying you are resident is probably enough for your passport.

Make the police report to report them as stolen.

Take a copy of the police report and any copies of the documents that you have for all of you. Ask them to issue replacement permits. This should be enough for getting new permits issued.

As for the passport I’m not sure why you would need your permit I order to get a new passport. I would do the same for that as I did for the permit and see what they say. A police report plus a copy of the stolen passport should be enough for them to issue a replacement, in fact the police report alone should really be sufficient.

Not true. Your permit is not a legally acceptable form of identification although it may be accepted by some officials. So no need to be upset at yourself for carrying both. Carrying them together rather than separating in the group perhaps...

True, you need both!

Where were they that someone managed to steal them? Have them on your person like wallet and phone!

For transport police, it's essential that you report the theft immediately so they can pull the CCTV. They usually only hold the CCTV for just a few days (we were told 3 days in Zurich)....

Indian passports will need to be requested from the Indian consulate general - I guess you know how to do that. If you don't need them urgently, then you can do a regular application - you'll need to notify them that the passports were stolen, though - so that will require a police report.

For your swiss ID, you can go to your local town hall (Gemeinde) - when they are open on Tuesday - again, if you don't need them urgently, you can request new ones (the Gemeinde will tell you how long it is likely to take) and if you need ID urgently, then you can request a temporary paper document (will cost extra)....

It's going to be expensive, so if you have insurance, check if they cover the costs of the theft....

And if the person also stole any other ID, credit cards, health insurance, etc etc etc, you will need to systematically report them as stolen, and it's essential to do that immediately.... each company/organisation/department will have their own system...

Were your things stolen within Switzerland or over the border ? Normally you need to report *immediately* to the local police, where the theft happened....
